Hi all

We are going to the Simpson in May going East to west , we are heading up the Birdsville track leaving from Adelaide. Last trip we stayed over night at Farina which was a great spot for the night. The only issue was that we got there a little early and this time we would like to go on a bit further. So my question is are there any good camp sites around the Marree area.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Gday Vern,
I'd go past Marree and camp at Clayton Bore. Has toilets and you can crank up the bore for s spa!

Clayton also has a great wet land to visit and as stated try the spar.

Forth that. Staying at Clayton also puts you in a good position to go from there to Birdsville in a day comfortabley and still allows plenty of time for sight seeing.

Hi Vern,

I will also add that as well, but make sure that you collect any timber for a small fire well before reaching it. You will find timber hard to get anywhere in that area and it would be a better idea to either bring some with you or collect it before reaching Leigh Creek.

Cheers

Is Clayton bore the same as Clayton Station as listed in Camps 5 as # 440?

Hi D&G

No, but all part of the same Station. As you are heading north up the Birdsville Track, you will pass through the named "Clayton River". Immediately after passing through it, you will see a sigh on your left, and it is then a small drive in. Continue on for a further 500 metres or so and you will see the turn off on your right to Clayton Station.

Top little spot.

Cheers

This thread is a bonus for me. I was thinking of asking myself.

We are going the other way round through the Simpson and both these places will do us. One for the way up to the Simpson and Clayton's for the way home. We are going west to east. Stayed at Marree last Easter (Lake Eyre flight) and would rather stay elsewhere this trip.

Thanks all

Agree also that it is a good spot but also consider Mungerannie in your itinery
The wetlands are nicer there IMO. We often stop there then have lunch in Birdville ( Curry Camel pie at the bakery) and push on to spend that night in the dessert.
Not real keen on camping in Birdsville.

We will be exiting the Simpson through Birdsville. Cannot stand the food in the pub. Too upmarket for me. A good stop for a pie and fuel and then away.

Just checked out the map. Looks like an excellent idea.

Phil it is nice for your last camp in the desert to be along Eyre Creek, great for the wildlife and a swim and it is a nice managable drive from there to Mungerannee with a Birdsville lunch or morning tea stop

Alby

Just what I was thinking. There were a couple staying at the base of the eastern side of Big Red next to the water. Plenty of room along the bank both north and south. And if crowded you could back track a few dunes. Short drive to the bakery for breakfast and then to head down the Birdsville Track.

Mate that sounds like a great plan and I will be doing the same myself later this year when we head back out there.

Hi Phil, Great idea if the bakery is open. We came through at end October last year and said.... "What time does the bakery open?"

When we went there the sign told us.............. see photo! LOL

It was open when we were there but not a pie in the place. The town was full of "fly-in" tourists and it had been eaten bare. Plane loads of them. Couldn't even get a seat in the pub for dinner. Booked out. Damned tourists. Sssshhhhhh We are one also.

Muloorina Stn is an excellent camp site. If lucky enough you will be able to camp on the edge of the waterhole.

Pulled into Clayton Camp last September with the intention of camping the night but it was dry and dusty and not very inviting at all. Went onto Muloorina and ended up staying 3 nights.

We've stayed at Lake Harry ruins a couple of times - a bit closer to Marree. Unlimited room to camp - it is quite exposed though, regarding wind (the whole region is, for that matter). The lakebed is usually as dry as a limeburner's boot and runs for about 10k alongside the road - that locality has an interesting history - numerous web sources on it.

Great place to have a hot shower too Darian but if privacy bothers you, you need to check if there is any traffic on the road LOL.

There a hot shower at Lake Harry too - there is a photo of it in this blog if you click here. Its a bit exposed though!
Last year L. Harry was full of water and a beautiful blue/green colour.

Cheers,

Val.

Hi

Further to Vals's reply above, here are a few pictures of the shower at the Lake Harry ruins, and Lake Harry with water.

Vern, I reckon you got it right the first time by staying Farina first night.

When we go to Birdsville we split it as Farina-Mungarannie-Birdsville.

Nice liesurely trip with time for looking around at other places on the way...you will be more relaxed and see things you would miss by rushing up in 1-2 days.
