Phil,
Sorry to bring crass commercialism to a 4x4 site, but the dictum is:
"charge what the market will bear".
I would not deny an organisation the right to charge for labour & expertise re fitting, but design & materials do not = $ 350.
Commercial savvy + margin = $ 350.
Remember no one is forcing you to pay the price.
IMHO, I would pay - I have too many times tried to do my own manufacture, only to realise that sometimes peace of mind IS worth paying for.
In other words, soemtimes peace of mind = what the market will bear = $ 350 in this case..............

If you pay more than $100 fitting your getting raped + The hassles of hacking guards, i would pay someone else, if they bleep it up, they can fix it.
Nice $350
snorkel also looks like its meant to be there, not taked on later..
I've seen one bloke given the wrong template for his car/
snorkel... Bad luck pal you didnt
check it.....
SNorkel, make them out of exhaust pipe. But then they look like bleep unless you make them out of stainless, which will cost you lots more than $350 by the time its bent, welded, and fitted...
If you think that $350 is a lot for a
snorkel, your in for a rude shock in 4wd anything...
YMMV...

Quote from the Truckster....
"If you think that $350 is a lot for a
snorkel, your in for a rude shock in 4wd anything... "
How very true this is!
If you build your own
snorkel, which may be a great idea, and it leaks
water into your engine on your first
water crossing, that couple of hundred you saved is gonna look pretty slim next to the invoice for your engine rebuild!!!
I have come to believe that there are areas in my fourby that I can "go cheaply" and things that need the "spend dollars" approach............
Just my opinion

Well said guys...
It is good insurance to get them to do it...Furthermore the R & D put into all the 4x4 races got to amount to some thing..
Anyway..is $350 for an Airtek or Safari? What is the price range out there? Thinking of putting one on my 4x4 beast.
Cheers

Might be expensive but I reckon that plastic is better than metal anyway. Must be lighter, quieter, able to be shaped more easily to fit the contours of the car. Is very durable and aesthetically pleasing! Relatively scratch resistant.
Half my car is plastic so should be very durable. Never hear of broken snorkels. My Toy - 2001 Landcruiser 100S Turbo Diesel

All the snorkles I have built for a number of my 4x4's I have made out of plumbers PVC pipe. I have made sure that they have been sealed and waterproofed before installing. The air intake has normally been sourced from a wrecker but the last one I bought new for $35(a while ago). The pipe cost $30 and for the connection to the air cleaner, I used flexible hose from a piece of scrap. On one vehicle I used a piece of swimmingpool hose which I knicked from a mate...it is still a standing joke. Then I have colour coded the pipe to match the vehicle's colour and it all looks pretty OK. Under $100 should do it. Be inventive...make your own and don't be brow beaten into paying exhorbitant 'what the market will bear' prices. You should also be able to build a snorkle for the same light cost out of aluminium scrap.
Just a thought...........

I paid less than $200 for a steel one made by Eureka in Dandenong (Vic) for my 40 series truck couldnt see the value in a $400 plastic unit , but then again mines an older truck, If I had a newer truck I would proberly pay more......dazz
