Gorrie Airfield was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airfield, 8 kilometres North of Larrimah, NT, during World War II.
The establishment at Gorrie comprised over 6,500 RAAF personnel responsible for aircraft and vehicle maintenance for the RAAF and United States Army Air Forces. A large petrol storage and bomb dump were constructed as part of the airfield. The remains of the runway and many of the buildings and structures are still visible.

Thanks Doug

All those old airfields make the trip up the highway very interesting and provide good dust free campsites

I remember camping here overnight last year. While lying in bed in the silence of the night you could hear the distant rumble of a bomber taking off, getting louder and louder as it approached us and then slowly disappear off into the sky. Was only the road trains but with a little imagination it sure took you back in time to when it was a major runway. Of course we also had to do the mandatory "take off" down the runway to get that sense of feeling.

Brings back good memories, thanks Doug.

Cheers Dave

Another great Sunday read Doug. Thank you again. The Narrator in the video clip sounds a lot like "Mick O". Pity it cut out just as he was about to get airborne. lol. Bob
