Hi all,
Sorry about what may seem as a strange request. Some of you may know I'm writing a book on the history of the CSR, I’m currently writing about modern impacts on the CSR.
I have seen palm trees at Durba and Killagurra (I know Killagurra is nowadays out of bounds). I’m not aware of any other palms growing on the CSR; if there is please advise.
Does anyone know if the palms are still there, I had heard anecdotally that they have been removed because they are considered feral? Can anyone help?
stay
well

hi i thing you may probably find that they were date palms and were taken there and planted by afgan camel drivers in the early days with the hope of been able to eat the dates while thay rested on their dates so to speak during the long journey
but i would say that the local tribes and bird life would always benefit first from such a scheme as they were near water holes
cheers

Phil Hi,
The palms from Durba and Killagurra have been removed. The Info signs at Durba state that is because of the depletion of the water table. The hope is that in time the spring and water table will return to former glory.
When I was there last year the Rangers plus trainee's called checking permits etc. Suggest You could contact Him for more intimate "local" knowledge. They are based at
Jigalong.
Hope this helps Mike.

Phil,
This photo was taken in June 2007. I am sure the palms were there in 2006

Phil,
This is the best photo I have of the palms. This was taken in 1995.

That should be 2005 not 1995.
