So we are now in the same year as our trip YAY so the planning has to be kicked up a notch which means a lot of new questions to ask but I will ask them gradually not overload you all.

First part of the trip we are heading from Marree to Oodnadatta so just wondering what are the sights to see that shouldn't be missed and great spots to set up camp for the night? We will have our 2 girls with us age 5 and 3 yrs.

We were just going to travel and stop whenever but also want to make sure we stop to see places that SHOULD be seen while in the area.

Thanks in advance

Mrs Litlbalt

Hi Mrs Lilbalt,

in order from Maree to Oodnadatta;

Lake Eyre South Lookout
Curdimurka Siding
Mound Springs
Coward Springs (a fantsastic place to camp and good museum)
William Creek
Algebuckina Bridge
and many railway sidings along the track.

Search the blogs on here; I am sure there are plenty. Have a great trip.

One other place worth looking is Farina 50k south of Maree.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farina,_South_Australia

Also dotted off to the side of the track are various concrete structures that was used in the 50's and 60's for rocket tracking from Woomera.

Hi Mrs Litbalt,
I'm presuming you are driving a high clearance vehicle, we took another couple along that way a few years back and what was going to be a one night one day trip turned into a three day trip as they wanted to see every thing. Some of the high lights would be Curdimurka, the mound springs, Strangways Springs Telegraph station, Coward Springs, Warrina ruins, Peake Telegraph Station (allow a good half a day to drive into there and out), Algebuckina Bridge, Mount Dutton and North Creek, that just for starters.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Cheers

Graham

G'y Mrs Litlbalt

I suggest you get hold of the small booklet "Oodnadatta Track with regional roads and public access routes", available from www.outbacktravellers.com.au. It might be available from the exploroz shop also - I haven't checked.

It provides strip maps with all the sites, side roads etc, that you will need.

Have a great trip

Cheers
John

Thanks for the list of sights to see will write them in my notes.

Just wondering is the public access route to Lake Eyre North worth the drive down?

There are 2, the easiest is the one that starts Near William Creek. It is worth doing and even camping there.

Also take a flight with Wrights Air from the Maree Pub which is closest to Cooper Creek. We did that last week and saw over 10,000 Plicans amongst thousands of other birds in the Cooper between the Birdsville track and the Lake it's self which will be 100% dry by the time you get there.

Great entertainment for the kids on the ooodnadatta track is the "Dip" signs. Someone has gone and modified just about every one.
Cheese Dip, Skinny Dip, Drip, etc etc. Something to keep them amused for a few hours. LOL

I've been down he Oodnadatta twice this past year and very much enjoyed both trips. You might get a bit of good info out of these blogs I wrote. Loved the campsites at Anna Creek Siding (just out of William Creek) and also Duff Creek.

Beyond Oodnadatta you should consider heading to the Painted Desert, 2 hours roughly SW, off the road to Coober Pedy. Spekky place at dusk or dawn and there's basic camping at Arckaringa Station.

Thanks Yep we were heading to Coober pedy from Oodnadatta so that would be a good spot to stay depending where we stop the night before.

Hi Litlbalt -

When will you be traveling? My boyfriend and I are going from the middle of April to the middle of August and are doing just about the same route! I'm knee-deep in planning our trip also. Good luck!
