I bought a
HF Radio Training Kit from Lakecomm. The package included the Australian Guide to
HF Radio , along with a quick guide for my barrett 550 radio which consisted of two laminated A5 cards and their booklet " HF Principles " which consisted of 5 pages for $89
I would suggest for others sourcing the " australian Guide to
HF Radio " which is available elswhere for $20 and just read or download your radio operating manual. I regard the kit as very poor value.

Understanding antenna propogation and the different ionosphere layers between day and night are critically important to get your money's worth out of your radio. Dissapointing a 'guide' wouldn't cover that. Without this knowledge is like being given a car but not knowing how to drive it.
Spending some time on Google would probably give you all the info you need. You don't need to know the details. If you understand the layers during the day and how they lose their ability to bounce waves back then you're 99% there. With this knowledge you can change antennas and choose better frequencies to chat to people (lower at night).
