I own a 2000 Model Troopy (3 months out of Warranty) and have been told that I need a new speedo and a new transducer (device that turns the mechanical movement into an electric and sends same to speedo) Both do not work. Tacho comes on for a short time then stops & no odometre. It is very odd that both should need replacing at the same time. The cost? $800 - $1200, hence my questions.
1. Has anyone experienced either of these problems with this model and what did you do about it?
2. Does anyone know where I could souce either of these parts second hand at a fair price?

Vehicle has (had) only 75K on the clock.

Thanks, JW

Friar,
Thanks. I went to Toyota and told them that it had actually occurred during the warranty period (1 month before it expired), needless to say I don't think they believed me. They then offered to do the job 50/50. Which I thought was pretty decent of them. Until.....I made an enquiry elsewhere and found that at least one of the parts they had quoted me at 50% off, was in fact full price. So I could buy a part from my local auto electrician for $354, or I can buy it at my local Toyota dealership for $354, which according to them is 50% off. Their initial mark up must be pretty severe if it's half price! Anyway I am back their tomorrow and with a bit of luck might just get a real 50% off with the knowledge I now possess. Thanks again, you suggestion was right on track. The morale to the story is always know when your warranty runs out, and if it has you still might be lucky.

Regards,
Jon

Take a print out of the quote with you when they say its 50% off, even go to another yota dealer to check it first.

Then if they still say its 50%, then tell them you will supply then with them, and make a profit!!!

Truckster,
Thanks for the tip. Checked it at another dealer and found that the fifty percent off was only fifteen, they would have me believe that I was getting a good deal. All it took was a phone call to another dealer to confirm the scam. But, there is a good ending. A very honest person at Toyota has approved the fix as a full warranty job which I am thankful for. The kids and dogs would have been surviving on bread an water for the next year otherwise.

JW

Hi Jon

I needed a new transducer for my 80 series. As you say, it's just a rotating hall-effect switch but Toyota still charged me >$400 for it :-( No choice but to buy it 'coz it was affecting the engine management and would stall in the most embarassing places!

Sugest you just try the transducer first.

Penguin,
Thanks for the mail. After a bit more research I found that the 50% off offered by Toyota was actually only %15 off (checked the real price at another Toyota dealership and worked out the real reduction in price)....However...the story gets better. The is someone at Toyota in Melbourne who has decided that I can have the complete fix as a full warranty job which I am thankful for. There is obviously someone at Toyota who is keen on looking after their customers rather than ripping them off. Thanks for the comment about engine management, I wasn't aware of that.

Regards.

JW.
