Great Central Road

We recently completed the Great Central Road from Laverton to Yulara. The road from Laverton to Warakurna is in pretty good condition - no issues at all. However, the road from Warakurna to the Lasseter Hwy is a tough gig. Very corrugated and slow going.

Make sure you visit the Giles Weather Station in Warakurna. It's an interesting stop and the guys there are very friendly and helpful.

Cheers,

Mike

Hey Mike. When you say recently, when was that exactly?. I have been planning on riding my motorbike from Perth to Yulara for the last few months, starting on 7 feb, but lately I seem to be convincing myself to go with plan B, travelling to Hyden, Holland track, Kalgoorlie, Balladonia, Cape Arid, Cape le grande, Esperance, Perth. I do understand the safelty issues travelling the GCR, heat, possible wet weather, few other cars on the road. Can you enlighten me a little bit more?.

Hi there.
We left Perth on Boxing Day and then stopped over at Laverton that night. Travelled to Warakurna on the 27th Dec and then did the last stretch to Yulara on the 28th Dec. We (with 2 kids - aged 5 and 7) travelled on our own (towing a camper trailer) and did not have any issues at all. On the 27th (Laverton to Warakurna) we saw a total of 5 cars (all oncoming), but we also put this down to it still being a public holiday on the 27th. Warakurna to Yulara was certainly a lot busier - so maybe we saw 10 cars and stopped to give a fellow traveller our second spare tyre to help them get to Yulara. Certainly busy enough not to think we were not going to get any assistance if we had any mechanical issues (we certainly had enough food, water & fuel). It had rained just before we travelled, so there was a lot more 'greenery' around, but that had a negative impact on the road between Warakurna and Yulara. As I said, Laverton to Warakurna was in the main very good and easy travelling. The last 300km was a lot tougher, but still manageable at the right speeds.

As for your trip, I suppose it all comes down to your preparation and if you are prepared to sit it out if you have any mechanical issues. For us, the sunset at Uluru and the Valley of the Winds and Kata Juta are just soooo worth any obstacles that a bit of dirt road may throw our way. Plan B is also great, but by the sounds of it you are also Perth based so that is a trip that could be done much easier at another time.

I hope this help a bit.

Cheers,

Mike
