I'm in the market for a rear locker for my D40 Navara and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the Harrop / Eaton E-locker??

Thanks.

Fantastic, we ran E-Lockers in our Hilux and loved them..... no need to worry about air or other components failing or leaking...... two wires, a switch and a relay....simple

Hugh following in the USA.

We will be using E-lockers on our 200 series.

Yes that's what's got me interested, less 'bits and pieces' needed to make it work.

I don't know what the installation is like, but on their web site they say it's a simple swap over, or words to that effect.

Pretty easy to install if you have some diff knowledge like backlash/preloading and gear meshing.

Drill a 10mm hole in the snout of the diff for grommet.

I would recommend fitting new carrier bearings as I don't like using the old bearing once pressed off the centre...... don't worry about the pinion bearing, preload washer or seal.

Tools you need is apart from the basic hand tools is a press and dial indicator... and a bit of gear paint wont hurt to check the meshing of the crown wheel and pinion.

If in doubt take it to a diff specialist ..... may cost around the $150 mark plus parts (bearing and gasket).

Thanks olcoolone, I appreciate the info.

I rang OL yesterday and with everything it comes down to $$$'s. I also need a compressor for airing up. ARB have a buy 1 locker get a free compressor deal going which would see the air locker purchase save me a few hundred $$$'s over the e-locker. Shame, the e-locker sounds like a better product.

Before you make the final decision based on upfront dollars, as opposed to total dollars - upfront and ongoing
I had my LC checked over at Omeo last year prior to Beyond Hotham - all sweet. He commented on the Elocker and asked how it was going. My response that it was going well prompted the reply that a significant amount of his business is fixing ARB airlockers on local 4WDs used (roughly I suspect) in the bush.
Makes you think about why ARB has a deal on :-)

Yep, I know Andrew. It's not uncommon to hear about air leaks etc. I know 3 people who have air lockers and 2 of them have had trouble with them, not to mention all the people I don't know who I've heard have had trouble with them.

I've only just started reading up on the Detroit Lockers. From what I've read they've come along way since the bad old days and are supposed to be pretty darn good now. But I wonder, if they're that good, why aren't more people using them??

As I said below, I have a Detroit Truetrac LSD, not a locker, in the front. This is a mechanical LSD, not clutch plates, and works a treat.

I decided not to have a locker in the front because, when you need the extra traction, you often also need to be able to steer accurately and quickly as well.

About the only downside is that it does momentarily "kick" a small bit when powering up or down quickly. This can be disconcerting to those not used to it but it does reduce a bit as the diff warms up.

In the rear, I did not want an auto diff lock, especially when combined with the LSD in the front.

Cheers

Had an Elocker fitted to the rear diff on my 95 series Prado about a year ago - no problems to date. Yet to put it to a serious test

I have an Elocker in the rear of the TD 80 Series and a Detroit LSD in the front.
Both are working very well.
