Can anyone give me any tips or advice on installing a snorkel on my 80 series Landcruiser? I bought one off Ebay and the holes on the template don't match up to the holes on the snorkel.

I installed a safari snorkel on my daughters 80series and the template was "mm perfect".
You need to see what the Ebay guy says! Maybe they supplied you with the wrong template or the wrong snorkel???

Would this be one of the Safari look-alikes?

My SIL bought one of those (for an 80) a while back, and asked me to give him a hand to fit it (since I have the holesaw, and had previously fitted a Safari one to a Patrol)..

and yes, from memory, the mounting bolt holes on the template did not all line up w/- the threaded inserts in the snorkel.. The remedy was simply a matter of "adjusting" the template hole positions accordingly...

Not a bad idea to make the holes (in the guard) a little over-size, this gives you some leeway with final adjustment/positioning..
(I presume panel washers are supplied? if not, I'd get some.. don't forget the rustproofing/sealant;-))

In the above instance, the whole thing was looking rather "ordinary", and didn't look like it was going to properly fit the guard contours, but once we had it positioned correctly, and everything "snugged up", it actually turned out not too shabby at all;-)

Yes Ed, it's one of the Safari look-alikes. I've taken your advice on board, but my main concern is what position to drill the larger hole (for the air hose) as the template has no indication of that. I think once i have that main hole position, i'll be right, a bit of grease or wet paint on the threaded inserts of the snorkel, put it in position, should give me the position of the holes pretty accurately.

So the large hole is not marked (?) Can't recall if this was he case w/- SIL's example, but he may have marked it himself before coming here...

Presumably, the mounting bolt holes are marked?

If so, my suggestion would be to lay the template over the snorkel (mounting side), and line up the mounting bolt holes as best you can, and you should be able to judge the centre of the "spout".. Use a scriber (or similar) to make a small hole here, then position the template on the guard, and that hole should be in the correct position..

Take your time, and remember the old saying "Measure Twice, Cut Once" ;-)

As I said, If you make the holes a little oversize, you get some "wriggle room"

When I did mine, I run a bead of sikaflex between snorkel and guard, sealed it up good...
SIL didn't bother with the sikaflex (I did suggest it), but it came up looking OK..

Good luck with it....

The mounting bolt holes are marked, but some are 10 mm out!! I will mark the spout hole as you suggest, then i think i'll use the sharpened stud method as suggested in a lower post.
I'm not sure on the sikaflex, any real advantage?
I'll definitely be measuring twice, probably thrice, and cutting once......i'm nervous just thinking about it!!
Thanx for your advice Ed, you've been a big help.

ive got some advice - some mongrel up here in the cape stole my air ram from my safari snorkel a couple of months ago. $75 replacement cost.

now that ive replaced it - ive placed some self tappers in there as a visual deterrent - im sure they will bust out as easily as the hose clamp that accompanies it - but the other 50 cruisers in the street dont have self tappers - there fair game.

so far so good.

have fun

I am going to add something and I don't know if you are use holesaws much. If you use a holesaw do not drill you pilot hole with the holesaw. Always use a drill bit the same size as the holesaw bit first.

Have a good one,
R.A.

WBS,
I should have put forward the reason for the pilot hole.

When the person operating the saw drills through the surface the holesaw blade often hits the metal and breaks the bit. Then you have an uncontrolled blade doing a merry dance across your paint work.

I once saw an article on how to fit a snorkel by a monthly 4wd mag. In the photo you could see the gouge marks in the mudguard where the bit had broken and the blade had done it's nasty work. Funny they never mentioned anything about it. Then again the job was done by their resident clown and I am sure you can guess who that was.

jamdan,

Measure twice and cut once.

Also when you come to tighten the clamp around the snorkel body and the rubber tube that goes to the air filter. It will be behind the inner guard and hard to get to. If you remove the indicator assembly on the driver side you should be able to reach the hose clam from there.

As for the position of the holes drilled into the guard for the studs. I have an bolt that has the same thread. The head of the bolt has been cut off and that end has been ground to a point, just like sharpening a pencil.

Once the big hole has been cut screw in the sharpen stud and just give the snorkel a slight tap. The sharpened stud will make a small center punch make on the guard. Drill this mark with a 8mm drill. This is the same size as the studs supplied with the snorkel. Remove the sharpen stud and replace it with a stud supplied with the snorkel. The sharpened stud can then be screwed into another hole and the process repeated.

I hope that I have made my self clear on this process, this is how I have been fitting snorkels for years and every stud lines up with the hole in the guard.

Wayne,
Very clever idea thank-you.
Would also suggest that all holes be cleaned up nicely and coated thoroughly with anti rust paint, or preferred treatment to stop any chance of rust in an area you can't see
Cheers
