I believe there is a book that covers all Austraian Towns and provides a bit of information on what to see in the town and surounding district. Can anybody tell me the name of it and where it can be purchased.

Cheers

There was a book The Great Australia Gazetteer
We picked this up in a shop driving back from Cairns in 2004.
Apart from the maps and stories its makes the trip a little more interesting as you read the paragraph about each town you pass through.
For example:
The town of bananna (near Rockhampton) was not named after the local yellow fruit. It was in fact named after a local area bullock whos toungue hung out like a ripe banana when working hard.

All trivial facts but great to break up the boredom of long road trips

was about $20 and fits in the glovebox

I have done a search for it to see if it was updated but no luck

Details are
Title The Great Australian Gazetteer
Authors Focus Publishing Pty, Limited, Kerry Davies
Publisher Focus Publishing, 2004
ISBN 1920683194, 9781920683191
Length 448 pages

The RAC used to have a publication. Gave info on all the accommodation available and a small spiel about the towns. When we first did the 1/2 block in the mid 90's we found it invaluable.

The one i have is quite heavy and probably out of date as i have had it for some years. It is An Illustrated Guide to Australia Places and was published by Readers Digest. It is set up in regions, and has most major and many smaller towns listed, with points about each and must see things at each. I have two copies - because i also gave on to my late father.
