Which way from Birdsville?

Looking for some advice as to which direction to go for people who haven't been out there before.

We are heading from Sydney doing the Oodnadatta up to Ayres rock, Kings canyon, Alice, Dalhousie, Simpson, Birdsville. We were then going to head down the birdsville track and back hom the way we came although if we had time we were going to head up the strezlecki check out Innaminka and home from there but really dont think we will have the time.

So my question is if you were taking people out there or offering advice on best way etc who hadn't seen the Birdsville track would you go the full birdsville track and head home the way you came or go a small way down and head off on walkers crossing (I think it called) so we still got to see Innamincka.

Hi Litlbalt,
Walkers Crossing would be my preferred way but it has been closed for about two years, it may reopen soon. We travelled it in 2009 and it was a incredible track with ever changing colours in the sand hills and the track. We travelled most of the Innamincka side a few weeks back and some of the road was just a two wheel track but I guess if they open the road all the way across they will probably send the graders out.

Cheers

Hi Michael,
Had heard there is now a new bridge, wished we had gone there the other day to have a look. The government web site still shows Walkers crossing road closed.

Cheers

You could do one direction out through Broken Hill and the other head further south through to Renmark and follow the Murray river for an alternative.

Or if you are prepared to miss the Birdsville track head out from Birdsville through Napper Merrie etc Innaminka then home via Burke

They are all great ways to go so the only real solution is to plan a second trip another time

i guess it depends on how many days you think you'll be short in your time frame of your trip to do what you really want to do.
if it's just one day less you need, maybe head down the Birdsville to Marree and onto Lyndhurst, take the Strzelecki Track and head over to Cameron Corner (Monte Collina Bore along the way would be a good camp spot if time suited), then once at Cameron Corner head on home via White Cliffs or Broken Hill. not quite getting to where you wanted to go, but pretty close to it.

Thanks fo the replies.

We have 4wks to do the trip I am trying to get a few extra days by leaving a couple of days earlier then planned but will depend on work.

Our problem is we just can't decide which way to go as we would love to do the whole birdsville and also head to Innamincka but dont know if we would be pushing it on time and dont want to rush the trip and possibly miss things along the way.

There's much wisdom in the saying that goes along the lines of taking time and seeing a few things well, rather than trying to do too much in too short a time.

Good luck with the decision-making.

Good thinking. And I understand John's point as well. The problem that like a lot of people we also have commitments and what with the damned obligatory one week close down from Christmas to new year that only leaves us three weeks to do our trip which is Marree, Oodnadatta, Chambers, Lambert Centre, Mt Dare, The Simpson, Birdsville, Arkaroola, Yunta and home via Broken Hill, Menindee and the black dirt through Ivanhoe. Losing that one week is so darned frustrating. But I cannot wait until my wife retires in case I permanently retire (that's a possibility).

How does this sound after Birdsville if Walkers Crossing is closed: Down to Innamincka and the Dig tree via Cordillo Downs Rd, then to Cameron's Corner and on to Tibooburra via Sturt NP, Lightning Ridge and then home any way you wish with one or no stop overs.

As John said. Best of luck with your decision.

Phil

You could go Birdsville onto the Cordillo Downs road and then cross over after Cordillo on to the Arrabury Road which will bring you to Nappa Merrie and the Dig Tree before heading into Innamincka and then down to Camerons Corner and Tibooburra.

Do that! Give The Birdsville track a miss ..... unless the ferry is still running, then that would be an experience...
Doh, that didn't help.

I agree eighty matey, and viv. Phil, I think there's 2 trips there unless you bring on that retirement.

If it's history you are chasing then I guess the three tracks are a must, but it really depends on conditions at the time you are there and is probably trying too hard. At the least, there wont be much rest time. Maybe go for 2 out of 3 and have alternatives planned, or at least be prepared to change plans as conditions and locall advice at the time dictate.

I personally, having travelled so far, would not miss The Rock (Kings, etc.), The Desert Crossing or Innaminka, all are spectacular.

So my advice, in a nutshell, make the decision on the last leg when you get there (Birdsville) and probably leave the Birdsville Track out if you find youselves getting time poor. Cut straight over to Innaminka via Cordillo Downs and the Dig Tree, then down to Cameron's Corner, Tibooburra and Bourke and brace yourselves for the black top home

Which ever you choose, there is no wrong or right, just what seems right at the time. The memories WILL stay with you for a very long time.
