Yabbies for lunch anyone? I did not take these photos personally but they came from my brother in law.
Photos of yabbies covering the ground alongside Cooper Creek Nth of Ballera.
They are either feeding at night, or the water they are living in is shrinking, so nowhere to live.
They are being collected with broad mouth shovels - no net needed.
Many are bigger than a Red Bull can in length.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi

Same pictures and some discussion posted in June 2011

Thread 87181

If you do a forum search on Yabbies some additional threads - some related to Cooper/Birdsville.

Cheers

Sorry about that! Even though I am a regular reader I do not remember that previous post. Two lessons for me here:-

1. Research my facts first (dont trust brother in law)
2. Exploroz would be the first place such a remarkable event would be published.

Oh well

Naughty you for not searching before any posts.
Don't recall seeing this one, but don't sit on the site 24/7 like some.....work needs to be done.
Great pics though. What a feast!

Cheers Greg,

I must have missed the first post as well but one of the highlights of life is a feed of yabbies by the Cooper. I was pleased to take the Crown Prince on a fleeting visit to the Cooper in July of last year and despite absolutely crappy weather, was thrilled to find he and his other fishing mad buddy cooking yabbies two at time, vertically in a soup tin. Great to be kids having an adventure and as I firmly believe, "Time spent by the Cooper is time not deducted from ones lifespan"!

Hi nolo
Read same post last year and where heading for cooper for a couple of days. Thinking no need for packing too much food!! We were there for three days and didn't even see a dead one? Have heard similar stories when arrived back. Makes you think if its a hoax.

On thye way back from the Birdsville races last year, we bumped into some people at Noccundra Pub. They'd been up to 1am that morning on the Cooper, at Durham Downs, cooking yabbies. They had 4 kilo of yabbie "meat"in their fridge.

I'm planning on having a look on the way home from the races this year.

Hi Nolo

My husand, son and myself stayed camped at the Pryors in Innimincka during September, 2010 and we were catching yabbies of this size in a milk crate. We enjoyed them with a few glasses of Moet Chandon. ( wonder what the rich were doing that day!) Most enjoyable! We can not wait to go back and enjoy some more. At the end of the month we are travelling this great land for an indefinite period of time, so hope to find lots more yabbies.

Awesome pics!
