This morning I went to book a flight to Los Angles with Qantas.
I want to go one way in the 21 st Feb from
Sydney and the price for economy was $1996.
Next I looked at booking a return flight and descovered for the same flight, same day, same class, I could go there and back for $1200,
Why is it $700 cheaper to go there and come back rather than just go there?
Needless to say I will fly with another airline. It is ard to support Australian industries sometimes.

Carl, never try to make sense of airfares.
I used to live in London and travel to HK and San Franscisco a lot.
HK - London - SF - London - HK was $2000 less expensive than just London - SF return on the same airline, same flights. So I used to book from HK every time.
Or Qantas will do Mel - HK return for $888 inc taxes at times, but if you book with FF
miles it is about $650 just in taxes, plus 120,000 hard earned
miles.
Or why is it always cheaper to book a ticket if you transit through another location. That's 2 take offs, 2 lots of airport taxes and charges, longer distances and more handling.
I never understood it.

That's how it is and many factors come into play including flight direction, number of passengers, how many landings or stopovers and the biggest thing competition.
This is what Qantas is up in arms about with the unions and their employee's..... the unions what better pay and
services for the Qantas employee's (who in the airline world earn substantially more then there counterparts) and keep maintenance in Australia.
The "another airline" who you are going to use; use cabin staff and crew paid less and in most cases overseas cabin staff and crew who may earn 1/2 of what Qantas staff are paid..... plus their planes are maintained overseas and you will find even that Qantas is greedy the other airlines will charge you for everything and it will be more then Qantas.
As Qantas said you want us to be an international worldwide airline competing with the others we have to lower our overheads down and pay what the others are paying..... for some reason the unions and the Qantas employees's don't get ......and some of their passengers don't either.
Any other country that accepts overseas airline charge a tariff to aid their own local airlines..... for some reason the government here has this idea that if you invite others into a market with no tariffs the market will become more completive.
Why do you think so many other Australian icons and brands have gone overseas..... Australia is not big enough to support the market share they need to stay viable in a world market.
Australian companies get charged hugh tariffs to compete in overseas markets but overseas companies who want to come here get a welcoming gift.
Welcome to Australia...

WOW...............that was a lesson in economics. Don't think it got remotely near the point I was making. I wanted to us Qantas but why is return airfare cheaper then one way????????????????????
The other airline is Jetstar (part of Qantas) and yet their one way airfare to Honolulu is just $459 and this one I am using. Still Australian
You try to support Australian companies but if they offered a one way air fare I would.

I thought Qantas were getting a lot of their maintenance done off shore now?
