I have a Garmin Nuvi 1490T GPS which I would like to be able to use away from 12v or 240v chargers for longer periods than the inbuilt battery allows (about 3 hours). I have heard of external USB battery chargers for phones, ipods etc. Will these work OK with a GPS and has anyone had experience with these external battery supplies on a GPS?

Not necessarily. I have heard there are rechargeable battery and/or small solar panels rechargers. Apparently you charge the batteries and then connect your device via USB cable to charge it. Now that we have stopped for a few days I'll consult Mr Google.
