Gday. I'm interested to know if you can buy an inverter that converts 240V to 12 V. We have 2 x 12 Volt flourescent lights which I hope to be able to run off 240 Volt with the appropriate inverter (if it exists?) I went to Dick Smiths and they didn't seem to have one. Can anyone advise me please?

You don't want an inverter but rather a 12 volt power supply. They should be available from Dick Smiths or Jaycar. I don't know what sort of issues you might have running a flouro straight off a power supply though so perhaps just get a 12 volt battery that you can recharge using a normal car battery charger.

Hi Steven

You are after a rectifier, not an inverter. But I'm with Tim. A 12v power supply seems a much better idea. I picked up a Projecta 17ah single cell jump starter from Repco for $100 after researching back up power on this forum. You then have the advantage of being able to jump start the car if your battery goes flat, so long as you don't run the fluoro's for too long. Most of the fluoro's I've come across are 9 or 12 watt, so only use 1 amp per hour off a 12v battery. With the 17ah jump starter, you could run the lights for a good few hours, and still have enough juice to jump start the car in the morning, then charge the unit up again while travelling ready for the next night.

Hope this helps

Rob

I have just been to Springers (Brisbane 3889 8898) and they sell a Waeco Set up you are looking for. Model no. n4213 and ranges from 100 - 140 $. They also do phone orders etc. It converts 240 into 12v.Jack at sleep
