I own an 80 Series 96 Std Deisel, with 450,000 kms on the clock. Its had some mods - bar work, wheel carriers, built in drawer system,
water tanks, l/range fuel tanks as
well as the usual
suspension blah bhah. The cruiser has had great overall reliability despite about half of its kms doing tough work (buggered a rear hub has been the worst of it) but given my wife and I some great joy off the beaten the track, so we're really reluctant to let it go (that and the price of a 100 Series, plus all the mods I'd have to pay for all over again) but...
I'd like to have a few more ponies under the bonnet, particularly when pulling a trailer with a full load of fuel (285l),
water(200l) and loaded roof rack but am reluctant to fit an aftermarket blower/supercharger as I'm not really willing to compromise reliability - I don't want to break down hundreds of kms from civilisation.
I guess this resticts me to a total engine swapout. Anybody done this? Ideally I guess I'd like to get hold of a 1HD-FT or similar but suppose the cost would be huge - anyone know of any WA sources? Brunswick Diesels south of
Perth do Chevy 6.5l Deisels, anybody had experience of these ? Power/Reliability/Thirst?

Hello Martin,Re build of your motor $9,000 which must give you a few more ponies or a Chev V8 $15,000..... Big difference

deduct trade in for your 1HZ (should get about 3 grand with those Km's).
Heaps more ponies in 6.5 Chev than a rebuild of 4.2 but it is big money.Allyn

Hi Allyn,
Nothing like a V8 smokey detroit.
Mine's petrol but will be putting a 1hz in when she gives up. The only turbo I'll put on is a genuine toyota one. Two of my friends are mechanics and agree that the after market turbos tend to blow the heads on the 1hzs' whereas the toyota one is designed specifically for it.
You don't need a V8 to tow a trailer, I only see them as weekend warrior hillclimbing stuff/ competitions and pole position at the traffic lights.
As Allyn said there bloody expensive. I think you should get a rebuild (even brand new 1hzs I believe are at the $6000 price mark) put a genuine turbo on it and spend $2000 on air lockers to help you up those hills that apparently only the v8s get up.
Also got to think of spare parts, chevy parts are rare at smaller regional areas whereas there's almost always a tojo dealership near by or somebody with the spare part.
Sorry for late reply but been away for some time.
regards
ChrisNice southerly coastal fishing trip someday.

Engine swaps are more of a nightmare... Costs, INsurance hassles, Engineering issues.
$9k for rebuild, or $15k for swap, go the swap! V8 Chev Turbo Diesel, the one out of the Hummer, would rock.
Which motor do you have??
www.lcool.org has good stuff on Cruiser powerups, and mods.. check there.

I know this is a long shot, but have you tried Toyota? I have read somewhere that they have just dropped prices on brand new diesel engines....worth a try...??? When you say prices are huge...whats your budget? Like you said, you just spent all the money setting it up exactly how you wanted it...it'd be a shame to get rid of it, right? When you look at the price of a replacement truck.....the price wouldn't look so huge then would it?
Just a thought....
Cheers :-)

If you do an engine swap stay with toyota and go for a 4.2 turbo out of a late model 80 series, its a straight swap without the hassels of conversions.

To Dave from fraser coast 4wd club,
You need'nt worry about those Toyota prices as I recently looked into buying a brand new 2h as opposed to getting
mine rebuilt. Yes they still have them manufactured and the price $16,000. Toyota explained to me that the sale only covers their late model engines.
Well I guess you can guess which way I went! Fully rebuilt including pump and injectors for $9.800 less.
Regards, Jim.

Mrdesmo hit the nail on the head .
Ballarat Toyota and possibly others have dropped the price of a brand new 1HZ to $6800 compelte with pump and injectors and it would only be 8 hours labour or 4-$500 to install.Fully recon units are going for $5200.Have a look in the 4x4 trader magazines .Someone in
perth is selling new 1HDT motors for $8200 in the Sunday Times but Im not sure if the turbo is included. Before you go the V8 chev diesel option do a search for the Diesel Doctor. Its a self help for owners of these

It is TOYOTA THEMSELVES that have reduced the prices. All dealers can do the special prices not just one or two. The engines are partial engines ie head to sump no external add-ons like injectorr pumps/manifolds. As the ad says in the magazines - go to your Toyota dealer. You may even get a better discount from the dealer you normally visit. We have so little time to enjoy our land

Dave, who cares who dropped the prices. The only ad Ive seen was by
Ballarat Toyota and when I rang them I was told it included the add ons,pump/injector ect but they only had one left and looked like it was sold. Then 2 months later the motors were advertised again at a similar price and I assumed it would include the extras.
What kind of clown would buy without checking for themselves anyway!
Truckster I dont know what you pay in the rarified air of Nth Balwyn but I pay $55 an hour for a top class L/C specialist and $45 for brake and clutch men. They are both registered businesses with proper premises.
If I can pull out an old red motor and put it back in the same day in my driveway I expect a qualified mechanic with hoist and a 2000 piece tool kit to do it as
well.
If you read my post properly it says $4-500 for 8hrs
When your flogging those 6.2/6.5 boat anchors it would nice to tell people that most of the 2nd hands coming in are duds that have been patched up and the best ones stay in the US.They are so bad that most GM dealers in the US are refusing to stock them unless a customer specifically orders one.The Ford Powerstroke is outselling them by a mile and have you noticed the Holden Suburban has disapeared from our shores? The usual problem is the Stanadyne injector pump or head cracking .General Motors are frantically looking for a replacement and have been to Cummins who want a gear box change before they supply a replacement which GM dont want .At the moment Isuzu are the front runner

Hi
The count is up to about 5 cruisers on lcool that have replaced the 1hz with a factory t/d motor, the latest model was a hz105, now hdft105. They are imported from Japan and need the 1hz starter only. Best thing is your 1hz motor can be sold test driven b4 removal, so top money is available for it.
