My daughter is leaving Newcastle to drive to Darwin on the 5th of March.

Due to the weather which would be the best way for her to drive. Through Queensland or through South Australia?

G'day Elizabeth,
Our son drove from Maitland NSW to Darwin about 2 weeks ago. He was a little concerned about the water on the roads through Qld, so he went via Broken Hill, he went through the Flinders Ranges and Oodnadatta Track, then to Coober Pedy but you could easily stick to the tar and go via Port Augusta. he had a great trip, spent a day or 2 on diversions such as the West MacDonald ranges, but still took less than a week. Having said that, he did cover a lot of territory each day and was up early each day with just himself and his swag to pack up. Hope this helps.
Chris

Elizabeth,

There hasn't been much rain through central & western Qld lately, that would stop your daughter from getting through to Darwin. There have been some storms in the area, but not enough to close the highways.

I travel from Longreach to Barkly Homestead twice a week, and there's been nothing to stop us for a couple of weeks. Have just got home from Cairns tonight, where it rained all last night, but we were still able to drive down to Townsville, then across to Winton.

I would be checking road reports websites about 3rd or 4th, but save a lot of fuel by travelling through Qld. You could ring me, if you wish, next Sunday, and I could give you the latest news, as I go up Fri and back Sat. Mobile is 0427 727 302.

Bob.

Also, have you given any thought to a family member, or perhaps a friend, travelling up there with your daughter, and flying home. Jetstar do a service from Brisbane to Newcastle. And of course, Darwin to Brissy.

Would be good to have the companionship, and share the driving, because it's a long way........especially if you aren't used to long distance driving. Or perhaps an iPod with LOTS of music will help.
