This question is to people who have a sat-phone "and" a hf radio... "I am thinking of buying a hf radio but i already have a sat-phone... Is it a handy to have both or is just the sat phone enough??.. Are the features of the hf worthy of spending the 3 g's or just stick with the phone??"

Stick to the Sat Phone unless you are a bit of a radio buff or you have mates with HF sets

I think that if you are travelling in the nowhere land, its nice to have all options between cars, 1 with HF 1 with Satphone...

Just nice incase something ISNT working due to damage from a crash or other..

YMMV

Voxson,
a lot has been said on this and resides in the archives. Both is best, but we are all constrained by cost and clutter. Satphone for reliable emergency comms. HF if you need to be part of a community.Bob

Voxson,
I just have HF don't have a sat-phone, a phone you are relying on contacting a person, with a HF radio have the possibility of contacting hundreds possibly thousands of people at once, and that person that could help could be 10 klms away over the next hill. As mentioned both would be the best. My opinions as usual.Keep the shiny side up

I have a current model HF radio and subscribe to both VKS737 and a radio telephone network (Bush Telephone). When I go away, I radiotelephone my wife to tell her where we are etc. I have found this very reliable. It costs $115 per year to subscribe to this service (+ calls).

The only advantage of a sat phone, is that people can contact you more easily, provided you have the unit turned on etc.

If its for business, then a sat phone is good. For everything else, get a current model HF radio. I spent $3000 on a Barrett 950 with autotune. Enjoy the sked sessions on VKS, then leave it scanning in case anyone wants to selcall me.

Voxson,

Just to add, that your sat phone is good for emergency use. But all you can do in an emergency is phone the nearest police station for help, or someone else for advice.

But the HF radio is great for general info (weather, road reports, rain etc) and as mentioned before, on the sked sessions on 8022, you can be in touch with "unknown" willing helpers nearby. VKS737 is widely used by outback travellers.

With a sat phone you should be able to phone up the VKS folks and ask then if they could put out a general call to users indicating you problems, with a view to getting someone in the area to come to your aid.

Yes? No?

I have a chance of picking at a Motorola / Iridium phone at a good price from a mate of mine and had thought this could work.

Safe travels

I wouldn't necessarily rely on that unless you were a member of the particular HF network. There has been a bit of rivalry between a couple of networks so it would depend on the situation and the operator as to whether it bgot through. If you got a flat and haven't got a jack or you broke your diff........probably not, if you have severed an artery or have been bitten by a snake.......probably. I went HF because you are never alone and that is handy if you travel on a one car or small group journey. General communication, news, weather, rfds etc etc. certainly better than a sat phone that just sits there looking at you. The HF costs hardly anything per year and can be used antywhere anytime. The sat phone is going to cost you a monthly charge which over the life time will work out dearer than the HF initial cost.

Satphones are not like your ordinary mobile. If you are talking about the $1000 type you have to be stationary to use and I found the ones I hired seemed to chew up the power pretty quickly. That may have just been the fact that they were hired.

HF for me by a country mile!We have so little time to enjoy our land

Thanks Peter. My phone is yet to arrive and be connected. I had planned to use it only for emergencies and for sending/receiving email. It is a 9500.

I think you should swap over to HF. If it's any help in your decision making process I think I know just the bloke who'll take that old sat ph off your hands .... you know ... reduce the clutter in your truck...

I think i will go the step further and find out more into the hf radio because the trip i am stating in my tagline will be done as a loner.... Not just one vehicle but just me on my own....
I would like to hear from anyone who has done the second leg of my journey from Birdsville and up.....
I know the general dangers of freaks and weirdos like the Falconio saga but what about " are there many places on the way up where i could accidently wander into and become threatened by any native aussies?"... or is it smooth sailing up to Darwin from Birdsville - Mt Isa - Lawn Hill - Daly Waters and up......

G'DAy All

Been in places where Satphone didn't work long enough to get a call established. HF worked fine. Deep narrow gully, tall forest. 5 injured people on the track. Government surveyor with Sat phone couldn't get a call out.

I'm sure this is just one of those places, but, if it can happen once it will happen again. Besides, with a sat phone you are relying on a third party ( the satelites ) for your comms.

HF is direct.

regards & seasons greetings
