The Defender could of done what my VW Beetle did 35yrs ago!, Go up in smoke!!... Thought i'd check the Battery which is under the passengers seat.Had not been there for a while..lol, Jeez talk about acid build up, it was all over the holding down bracket heading down the sides, and up towards the seat,.. The vw beetles had a tin cover that was sooooo close to the terminals that things used to get very hot when acid built up and quiet a few caught fire mine being one of them.....Well .Pommy engineering so be it,nothing changes, lol,..I think VW would be different these days,....Aren't They???.

Axle,
I know what you mean about Lantrover batteries and no I didn't make a mistake with the lantrover spelling. Murray/TI. for Landrover.

Had a bloke in the next donga to me 40 odd years ago that put a battery under his bed. Guess what when he climbed in and went into his drunken slumber the battery shorted out on the wires under the bed and caused a good fire.

Not happy doing that about a month later he gets full of turps and starts blasting away with a 308 in front of the dongas. We were glad to get rid of him and his loose cannon.

Love her or hate her this old girl took me to the top in the early 70's. At least I never had to worry about brakes, she never had any

Axle,
Here is another landrover I owned. I even had money for tyres. Must have been hot the day I took the photo as I notice I had the air con screwed up to the max.

It had a hand built chassis and even had a lift. The exhaust ran through the chassis and out the front bumper.

I remember a lady policeman getting up me about something and she lent against the bumper. She burnt her leg and was not entirely friendly toward me after that.

Both the old dears had the side /overhead value 4 cyl petrols. That old green beast used to leave landy sixes for dead.

Bob,
don't laugh but I used to carry a roll of No.8 fencing wire and a set of wire strainers as a winch.

I was able to pull from any point and move her a little bit at a time using a shovel as well until I found some harder ground.
