Hey all, was talking to Overkill Engineering in Hornsby the other day, and found out they had 10 rockhopper gear sets to get rid of at good prices.
If anybody is after some low 4wd ratios for their patrol, then ring up quick.
Unfortunately, we bought some 2 years ago for out competition truck for a lot more.

$1000 ono, considering we paid $1400 from marks adaptors for their gear set.
Give them a call, tell them Mick Christie would give you a deal!

Hi Mick,

Have just called them, no one in at the moment so I will try again a bit later.

How difficult are these things to install ?
Do you need a diff / transmission specialist or can a fairly skilled backyard mechanic fit them ?

I live in Penrith so Waitara maybe a bit of a hassle for getting them fitted, just looking for options / ideas.

Regards,
Mark

I thought it was quite simple, instructions came with mine.
The only tool you may need is a die grinder to remove a small section of aluminium housing.
If you need a hand i could help with fitting.

Ask for Sam Keck at overkill, and see how much cheaper than $1000 he will supply it for.

Hi Mick,

Received the gears this afternoon. No instructions were included.

The actual gear layout seems simple enough, I have an input gear, idler gear and an output gear.

My problem is determining where to split the transfer case from the gearbox. I think it should be split after the piece with the gearbox mounts on it, is this correct ? This means the rear of the box is still supported on the cross bar. Seems to be an open drain hole at this point which suggests this is the separation point.

If I am correct, then all I need to do is drop front and rear drive shafts, transfer case lever, disconnect speedo sensor cable and transfer case sensor, tailshaft brake cable, split the transfer case from the gearbox.

Anything I am missing ?

Do Nissan use gaskets between the various sections of the Transfer case or is it just a silicon sealant that is used ?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Mark

Yep, sounds like your on the ball. Transfer will separate from the box leaving it supported on the mounts.
Its not too heavy to drop off to the ground, but be ready to lower it.
The gears will only fit in one place, so its fairly straight forward.
The larger gear you will have to grind some of the housing away till it slips on, youll see what i mean when you strip it.
Silicone is used to join the two halves back together, but remember: too much is better than not enough!

Thanks for that Mick, another thing I am not sure of.
Where is the best spot to disconnect the transfer lever ?
Looks like I can just undo it from the shaft on the side of the Transfer case, this leaves the complete lever and the rubber isolator hanging, is this OK to do or is there some trick to disconnect from up top somewhere. Any precautions here ?

Regards,
Mark

On the ball again, just disconnect it off the round shaft, and remove the funny looking position selector, horse shoe thing and bobs your uncle, leave it hanging in place.

Hi Mick,

Just bought a set $1025 including delivery by courier.
I am happy with that price as I was looking at $ 1395 + Delivery from another source.
Sam said if they don't have instructions with them he will write something out for me. Once I have had a look at whats involved I will determine the best way to get them fitted.

Thanks very much for the lead, greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Mark

The transfer case are all similar on the patrols, the gearboxes are the only thing that changes.
The rock hoppers should - dont quote me - fit all the nissan transfer cases.
We have the marks gears in ours, as they were the cheapest then but the hoppers are basically exactly the same.
This deal is the cheapest yet, and sam said he's only got a few to sell at this price.

If you have an Auto, they are almost mandatory.... Having been in a GU4500 with them down Ohshet hill on the club property, its INSANE the difference. not joking.

but the thing I dislike about them is you lose your normal Low range..
High is normal, but Low is handy sometimes, where the Rockhopper LOW LOW would be too much.

Dual transfer cases would be the best option I think, but then tailshaft lengths could be an issue.

Marks had a kit for dual transfers on their site too $1000..
