My family and I are wanting to explore the the northern part of victoria just after christmas (we're in melbourne) for 4 days or so. Possibly somewhere between Echuca and Cobram. Does anyone have any suggestions for camping spots(we do enjoy roughing it but some water would be nice :) ) and 4wd tracks to put my prado through it's paces. or it this a no go area during the silly season like alpine NP?

Mate, that area is so busy over the Xmas / New Year period it makes Burke Street on Xmas Eve look quiet. You will be lucky to find a spot near the river as they are probably already taken (Sat 20th). Also there is no-where up there to challenge a Flacon wagon with a caravan on the back, let alone a 4X4. My suggestion to look more east on the Murray, probably upstream of Albury/Wodonga, it will take longer to get there, but is worthwhile.

If anyone has got any better info, please correct me.

Was up that way earlier this year and some of the tracks around Echuca are definitely not suitable for a Falcon and van..believe me.. I tried them , wihout the van of course , even rough going for just the Falcon..cheers

Thanks, we've only been in Vic for a short time and found that even though there are so many great spots to check out, everywhere close is like burke st during holidays

Hi Toonfish
is Koondrook forest on Gunbower Island
Did a lot of camping & fishing a few years ago out from Cohuna on the Island & yes it does get very interesting when its a high river,
High cambered tracks are no good when there wet.

Cheers and a Merry ChristmasPrado TD Auto

If you go to the town of Barmah and cross the river into NSW there is a nice State Forest which has Murray River frontage. We have camped there on many occassions and it does not look like it is a heavily visited area. That is about the only free Murray camping site in NSW.

Cheers,
Willem

Hi
You will need to check about having fires in NSW forest in Summer, not sure but I think no Fires aloud.
There are lots of places up to Swan hill but if you want a sandy that could be a problem you need to get in early.

Have not camped out for a few years but Gunbower Island was OK plenty of spots of the River Rd also Campbells Island ( 5 Klm north of Barham NSW)

Cheers

Hi Play Rough
Oops I did a follow up to Willem instead of a reply to you,
any way where ever you go on the Murray you will enjoy it
just remember when it's dry it can be very dusty so dont camp right on the River track.
If it rains the clay tracks can be a bit slippery

And don't camp under any BIg Red Gums.

Gunbower Island is good its flat and any side tracks in low lying areas could be muddy or rutted.

Cheers & have a great Holiday

I see your delectable food pic has been replaced by two hungry looking customers....:-) Are you going to drink all of that booze over the Christmas holidays??????

Have a happy...hic....Christmas

Cheers,

Bernie,

Your are right....don't camp under River Red Gums....they aren't called widowmakers for nothing.
