I am hoping to get to the Surveyor Generals Corner around early June and was hoping then to travel east to the Stuart Highway, however I've been told by the Pitjantjatjara Cncl that any travel east from the 'Corner is no longer allowed. How disappointing!!!!

Hi Ron.

Firstly Always make sure you have enough fuel.

Secondly Don't camp along the route if possible

Thirdly Wave at all the other vehicles.

The Mulga Park Rd is a pleasant drive

Enjoy

Hi Lindsay

It's not as though you are crossing sacred ground

Most of these roads , of which access is denied , do not go to a community but is a common road to which the community access road is connected to.

These roads are maintained by the taxpayer.

The permit system for maintained roads is a joke , especially when date specific,
and you only have to look at map of Australia to see that only a small area of transit is allowed , permit free, to cross the country west to east.

Safe Travels

Teza

I am also planning to visit Surveyors General Corner in mid July, and would appreciate any feed back re the correct approach for permission etc.... If there is any one who has been there recently and knows about the contacts that are required I would welcome your advice. I believe we need to follow the correct protocol even though you may get away with just driving in. However this approach will eventually bugg... it up for others and inevitably result in complete closure.

Thanks,

Mike.

Hi Ron

I do not know where you have been looking, but according to both the Department of Indigenous Affairs and Shire of Ngaanyatjarrauk web sites, access has not changes.

You must pay a fee to the guide and a $ value per person.

Access is only permitted from Western Australia, via the Irrunytju (Wingellina) Community.

Unreal country out that way.

Cheers

Hello Ron,

To visit Surveyor Generals Corner you must get a permit from the Department of Indigenous Affairs WA. They have a website.

To travel on the Great Central Road WA you need a permit as well and if you are travelling east into the NT you need a permit from the Central Land Council NT. again you get that from their website.

As you mentioned permits to travel east from Wingellina & Surveyor Generals Corner are not usually allowed.

You should advise Wingellina Community that you are going to be visiting them and when you arrive you go to the Office where you pay a fee for your vehicle and passengers. It cost us $140 (1 vehicle, 2 pass). You then get taken by the local guide out to the corner.

Hope this has helped.

My wife and I accompaneyed Viv and Ray to the corner, So I might butt in, if you do not mind.

Viv's advice is spot on !.

Permits to get to Wingellina were free, but you need to pay the $$$ to get out to the Corner. The local's will direct you to the Community Centre, and someone will come out and get you.

You do not get anything much,
We were escorted by Lance, to the Corner, approx 7 or so kms, took some foto's. He was an awesome little fella, and a very proud man.

Cheers
Bucky
