Hello All,
My newly purchased GQ has a water tank fixed under the drivers side of vehicle. It seems to be a great addition for many reasons. My concern is, I spoke to the previous owners asking if they used any additives to keep the water drinkable . Their reply was NO. They told me they have never put anything except water in it from day 1.

I have sampled the water in the tank and it seems ok ( well I'm still alive) But I am wondering if there is anything that should be added to keep the water clean and pure. Its a checker plate constructed tank...Any feed back would be great.I love it when you talk DIRTY !

Does it have a drain plug ??

In any event you could wack in 100ml of pool chlorine or similar (White King or any laundry bleach) + a full tank and leave for a few days ... that'll kill any bugs for sure. Don't drink it though ... empty tank and flush thoroughly.

Hi Ross,
Yes it has a drain plug mate.
Ok I will try that, but my concern is....the tank has the dividers built in, I am assuming they are an absorbing material. to stop the water from splashing around and unbalancing the car in tight situations. I am concerned that the chlorine will attach itself to the dividers. Maybe it might needa few flushes instead of 1..what do you think Mate?I love it when you talk DIRTY !

I reckon the baffles are most likely aluminium also. That would be the most likely scenario when it was fabricated. Would be the easiest way to build it when you think about it.

Diluted chlorine shouldn't be a problem, but maybe you'd be safer getting a pack of water purifying tabs from the camping shop. You can get them for larger volumes. But I'd still give it a good flush cause the water tastes like crap .... well I think it does ... not that I'm an expert on that sort of thing. Most tabs are chlorine based anyway .. the other answer is just a cheaper solution.

Drop the plug on a slope and give it a good flush and I reckon you'll be as right as rain.

Hi Cokeaddict
I have an 80 lt stainless steel under the GU. The baffles are also stainless and how they work is they have hole in the bottom and top of each baffle to let the water through but slowly to stop the sloshing. I drain it every few months and just refill with Melbourne water. Not problems

I wouldn't worry about it mate. Don't put anything in the tank except water. But don't fill from a plastic/rubber garden hose as you may get a tainted rubber taste. If in doubt boil the water before drinking. But as you say, you have tasted the water and you are still alive and not running to the toot every 5 minutes...so there shouldn't be a problem. Just drain the tank regularly.

Cheers,Willem

you could use a few Milton steralising tablets (in the baby section at the supermarket). These tablets kill all the bugs and can be used as a water treatment for drinking water, so safe enough without excessive flushing.

Hi Cokaaddict

There are several issues about safe drinking water. As long as you fill up chlorinated tap water it will stay fresh for at least a few days if nort weeks. If the water is not treated it might be unsafe to start but even if it is safe it will go off within a few days (specially in hot weather) A organic slime can build up in your tank. If you are lucky it will small and taste bad and you would find out. But it could also be that you just get sick of it and this is no fun at all in very unplaesant if it happens in the middle of nowhere.

There are products on the market based on silver ions. This products get rid of any bugs and conserve the water for up to six months. The best of it is that it doesn't taste and it is said that silver ions help yur digesting system as well.
Here the link to the product I always used on my trips to the Sahara where good drinking water is just not available at all (not even in cities I would dare to drink it of the tap !!)

http://www.katadyn.com/site/int/home/outdoor_products/micropur/

If you don't mind the chlorine taste this is even a cheaper way to go.

In Australia it might not be a big problem since tap water is safe and mostly treated. But if I go bush I would not like to get sick because dunnies are far apart.

Regards
Ulrich

Hi Cokaddict & Ulrich

Although I don't know about the tablets you mention, Katadyn Filters have been available over the counter in Australia for many years. Two Outlets I know of are Bushcraft in Wollongong and Main Peak in Perth. That means they should be widely available in between.

Although I have never carried these I have had a couple of trips where I wished I had.

Best of luck with keeping your tank happy and healthy.

If you put clean water in there will be no dramas. When I say clean I mean no cryptosporodium, giardia or blastocystis. Because clean water has no nutrients in it nothing will grow. Because there is no light no algae etc will survive. The most toxic thing you are likely to ingest is the chlorine in the bleach! Don't add anything. Just drink it (Freddy). The water in our tanks is cleaner than any treated water you may find. And that includes the leaves, bird bleep etc that land on the roof.Bob

Hi
With my caravan tank, i put a little bicarb soda with a tank full of water and leave it for a day or so b4 draining, flushing, and then refilling with drinking water.
Works for me.
If you are still worried, there is some water purifying products with silver in them you can use in the tank aswell.
