What oil do you recommed for My Nissan 3.0lt ? Guys I havn`t been on the site for about 6 months and havn`t got time to search the archives, Last time I saw replies with heaps of web sites and on going debates re: what oils/manufactures are best
My Nissan dealer ( which I will not be re visiting) last put Castrol FMX Magnatron in however I have not seen this oil on the auto shop shelf. I only need the basic what spec is required is it 10w-50 or 15w-40 or what ?

15W40 CF or CF-4. I understand the later spec oils (CG,CH etc are not as good as CF).

The oil companies have websites with lube guides you can check too.

Tim,

Check out the Castrol website and they won't recommend RX Super for the 3 litre Nissan. It has to be CF.

I don't run a Nissan. But its nothing to do with synthetics. Its the API rating of the oil as specified by the Manufacturer. Your 4.2 has the same recommendation from Castrol. Magnatec, Agri Power plus, GTD, and GTX3 which are all CF are recommended before RX super. I think its to do with detergents.

I use Caltex Delo 400. It is as good if not better than most and you should be able to get it for around $80 for 20L, which will give you a few oil changes.

Tim,

You have an old can of RX Super. The current spec for RX Super is 15W-40, API CH-4/SJ . Info comes from Castrol website.

Shep,

Got my first service [second if you count the 1500 as a service - more of a look] but did not get it done at the Nissan place. Used a place that I trust in town.

I supplied my own oil and filter. Used a genuine Nissan filter [31 bucks] but its only the filter inners that you get [not the metal type Ryco one].

Went to Shell Technicians on the 1800 number and they recommended 3 oils for the crankcase in this order [best first]

Helix Diesel Super 15W-40
Rimula D 15W-40
Rimula X 15W-40

Bloke said that even though Rimula X was higher rated [used to be CG but now CF??] the better oil for the TD 3.0L was the Helix Diesel Super [78.18 for 20 litres or 19.80 for the 5 litre containers.

Annoyed me really coz i had 20 litre drum of Rimula X in the shed from when I had the LC 105 diesel but he seemed pretty keen for me to use the Helix from the start because that way the detergent levels in the oil and that sort of thing remain consistant for the life of the car. Supposed to be better for it.

Given that I have to get book services for the first 100K at least for warranty I just got the 5 litre containers and the mechanic used my stuff and his labour. End result was lower cost = no Nissan dealer involved = still got warranty cover.

Thats my 2 bobs worth if its worth that at all!!
