Hi All
Just wondering if anyone can tell me if all MQ diesels were the same size? Did they ever have the 4.2 in them or were they always the smaller motor? Also is their gearing different to the GQ's, I drove one a little while ago and remember it reving a lot higher than the GQ manuals I have driven.
I need a cheap diesel ute for work - a lot of the time bouncing around in the paddock spraying. I already have a GQ wagon which is great, can anyone with experience tell me am I better off spending a bit extra and buying an early GQ ute rather than an MQ.
Thanks...

Zap
I had an MQ from new many many years ago. 3.3 litre diesel or small petrol (2.4??) was all that was on offer, with a 4 sp box. I think it was the next model released which had a turbo but still 3.3
Not sure about gear ratios, but I recall it wasn't very happy over 110 on the road.

Hi Zapper,
I have a MK ('series II MQ') SWB turbo diesel. MQs got a L28 petrol engine (thirsty on fuel) and a 3.3L diesel - gearboxes were either 4 or 5 speed manual (not sure about autos??). MK's got the options for a 3.3L turbo diesel with a 5spd.
The diesels really do drive very slow and truck like but get outstanding fuel economy (I think I got ~10L per 100kms last time I checked).
Suspension is also hard/harsh and is limited a little in ground clearance for a 4WD (most suspensions are sagging due to age). The diesels are considered VERY reliable (mines done 400,000kms and still going strong). Petrol engines (sourced from the Datsun 280ZX) are more suited to the road but drink heaps of fuel and dont last as near as long.
A GQ is definitely a better car (being coil sprung, better diesel engine) but if you looking for a CHEAP reliable work ute then I would definitely go the MQ diesel ute. They are cheap to run (
well unless the diesel dies, but that goes for any diesel engined car) and have a almost indestructable reputation.
Oh and I agree with the prior statement they dont like a lot of highway work - on a hot (40 degree) day, flogging along the freeway or hilly hwys, you have to keep a close eye on the temp guage (although an intercooler wouldnt go astray on a turbo diesel like
mine - or 35 inch tyres to change the gearing! ;).
Dave.
