Hi All,
We are on the last section of our south-east Australia trip for this Christmas holiday and wondering if we are choosing correct route back to Brisy. Our plan is finish off our last section of trip from Adelaide to Brisy via Broken Hill ( highway 32),Dubbo ,Goondiwindi. Can someone kindley help me with following questions:
1.Is this the shortest route from Adelaide to Brisy
2.Is petrol available on this route, my L/C has 145 liter in total
3.Are there some good spots not to miss on this route
4.Should I bring some drink water with us, is water available
5.What temperature does I expect ? We have 2 kids with us
6.Any good Caravan parks in between? I was told Lakeview near Broken Hill is good.
7. Any other recommandation will be much appreciated.

I look forward to your help and may you have a happy New Year.

From Memory - 1999

1 Yes, Its why we chose itour purpose was to get to the race track not to tour.
2 Yes civilised country for the main part, we had 70l gas, 60 litre petrol feeding a 1974 coaster bus.
3 I would had loved to stop and look Parkes would have been interesting (radi telescopes etc) I'm sure theres lots others but scenery along way past Hay is great.
4 I always carry water, the servos on route have water (drinkable?) hey I live in Adelaide.
5 Its summer, I hope your a/c works.
6 Theres a smattering of Caravan Parkes etc all along the route some good some ok.
7 Apart from leaving the tin lids home? (Yeah I know its Christmas) Dont push it and spare the car and your nerves. Shut the kids up with a portable dvd player ($500) and a stack of wiggles dvds ;-)

Thats my 20cents worth.

Always have plenty of drinking water with you - always. You could have a breakdown - you could be stuck for a few hours in the middle of a hot day !
Temperatures could easily get to 40 and over, in western New South Wales, at the time you are travelling.
Re parks in Broken Hill, the Lakeview is small and is ALL sloping ground. My pick is the big BH caravan park by the cemetery.... its on the main road, just on the edge of town on the Adelaide side... you can't miss it.... all level ground, with shade and a pool for the kids.... excellent facilities overall. Have a good 'un.
Why I am here looking at this screen ?

Did the trip with a Magna and Joyce the jayco. All flat roads, good condition. There is a great caravan park about 8ks. north of Bourke. Don't stay in Bourke and I will comment no further.

Highway 32 doesn't go through Bourke but I would extend that warning to Willcannia.

Before Broken Hill you may visit the baroosa and Clare Valleys and taste someood South Oz wines. Burra has a fascinating mining history. At Broken Hill you may visit the Pro Hart gallery and others and also drive out to the sculptures on the hills outside BH. Once you get to Dubbo and turn left, you are on the busiest highway(Newell Hwy) in Australia and the main trucking route from Brissy to Melbourne. You could take a shorter route to Gilgandra via Warren and cut Dubbo out. There are caravan parks everywhere, there are roadside stops everywhere and the there is fuel everywhere. The longest stretch between major fuels stops is Wilcannia to Cobar. But with your 145lt tank you should be able to get from Broken Hill to Cobar if you do not want to stop in Wilcannia. Many travellers including some forum readers are scared to stop in Wilcannia because of their perceptions of the place.

Always but always carry at least 20 litres of water with you when travelling anywhere in Australia.

Visit the observatory at Siding Springs near Coonabarabran, visit Mt Kaputar NP out of Narrabri, go for a dip in the hot baths at Moree...just some of the many sights along the way. Enjoy.

Cheers,
Willem

baroosa should read Barossa and 'someood' should read 'some good'

You can never find a good proof reader when you need one :-)))

I don’t see any problem with stoping in Willcannia (eg for fuel) but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend camping there.

Chenj3,

Willem has about covered it. The route you suggested is not bad but the Shortest way would be to turn nth at Wilcannia and follow the Darling River to Bourke. There are a couple of Farmstays along the western side of the river (Killara and Trilby) and the towns of Tilpa and Louth are both interesting. Ask at Shindy's in in Louth about the reflection from the gravestone at sunset, it is amazing. From Bourke you can travell via Brewarrina, Walgett, Moree and Goondiwindi into Brisbane. This is a fair bit shorter than going via Dubbo but probably not any quicker. Alternatively you can go via the Oxley Hwy at Nevertire and via Coonabarrabran then there are a couple of options from there.

As for Lakeview Caravan Park in Broken Hill. I have stayed there a few times once for two weeks. The park is clean and tidy, the pool is well kept and the shop has most of what you need. The staff have always been friendly and helpful to me and my family. It's not the Paris Hilton but then it aint in Paris.

Have a good trip
Duncs.
