Mr Robert Walker
Can anyone advise me if the standard Australian map preloaded to Meridian Gold is of reasonable quality or is un upgrade required? I require it for a trip around Australia

Rob, remember that there have been thousands travel around Australia without a GPS and are continuing to do so. Paper maps go with minimum of electicity and maintenance still.
Looking at the standard map there is very little detail and you are better to go to Discover Australia Streets and Tracks, or if you are happy to take a laptop for moving map display and seeing where you are and what is ahead. OziExplorer or the Streets and Tracks mentioned earlier both will give you moving map on the laptop. DA Streets and tracks can have maps loaded into a 256 Mb SD card if you don't want your laptop going all the time.
Search the postings for reference for all mentioned here, there is plenty in archive. ExplorOz have them for sale too click on
Shop above for a good rate.Regards

hi rob
i have the magellan platnium, they are a powerful information giver, but to use it as a map from the hand held unit, you are watching it all the time, the screen is to small to look ahead at a decent scale, it does the job but they take time to look ahead, i have mapsend (all states on sd card) which helped boost the info on the screen, as for the standard data base they arent to detail and wouldnt get you far in the bush. They show major roads with names and some minor without names some tracks but a software package is recomended, preferabably with a laptop, then you cuold spend more money on the accessories, like the 12volt charger data cable, the port for the lap top, and a 12 volt charger for your lap top. Gets kinda expensive, but it works. I like to use it but the navigator still likes to look at the map upside down.
The question, yes you would require some sort of data upgrade,be it mapsend which is not visually pretty but does the job, or ozi explorer, or trackmaster. After all this you will still need maps.
Good luck
Neil

Neil & JohnR
Thanks for your info - I have decided that mapping on a GPS would be a pain (and a bottomless hole for money) so have decided to get a medium price GPS just to know my exact location if I need to use the HF.
I agree that I have never had problems using Hema and Westprint maps in the outback.

I suggest that you try to borrow one for a weekend.

Rob:
I have the Merridian Gold and is an excelent unit, however I use it as an aid to navigation with my paper maps.
It doesnt matter what scale maps you use (depends on the amount of detail you require).
I may be old fashioned be that is the way I use
mine

It isn't about paper maps or electronic.
I take paper maps but apart from looking at the route overview I find that most of the time I am using the maps on the GPSR. It is very convienent to be able to see exactly were you are, relative to land/road features, at any instant.

Goran
For your information and to enable you to download an update I attach a response to your comment from Magellin
Dear Sir,
The comment which you have indicated above was true up until about 2 months ago, Magellan identified that the lagging problem was due to a firm ware glitch, and have rectified that, the latest version of firmware 4.51 resolves this problem, maybe the user should upgrade his unit to the new firmware.
I have finally decided to go with Garmin Emap - thanks for everyones advice and to ExplorOz for the
Forum
