Santa just got me a Garmin GPS V. I'll read the book but like all little boys & girls couldn't wait to use it. Tried following my nose & setting find a street address but it basically told me that I shouldn't start from here (old joke). Actually it said no street near starting point. I was on a main road that was in the mapping so I must be doing something wrong. Any clues?

Is it already been outside ? And find out if it is on "Indoor use "
Once you get to know it it is a great toy, I have been enjoying it for a couple of years now.
Especialy the options that you can safe ten routes in the GPS itself.

Have fun,

Which maps do you have loaded ?

If you have Metroguide loaded then it cannot do turn by turn 'auto-routing' and it will give you a similar message.

If you have Metroguide then entersetupRouting - Route preference - Off Road
This will give you straight line gotos.

If you have City Navigator loaded then this will do the same thing (turning off auto-routing).

I hate this forum interface as it truncates certain characters. Try this;

If you have Metroguide then;
menu menu setup enter Routing - route preference - Off Road

You can still do a 'find' with Metroguide, just that it will do a straight line goto not turn by turn.

I also run Metroguide on a GPS V as the rural mapping is much better than City Navigator.
