Just been reading post 9353 and all the responses so I guess I cross Nissan off my list - or are they really as bad as is suggested? I understand Land Rovers also have "limitations". Any advice would be appreciated - particularly good reports on the above vehicles as I've heard and read plenty of bad ones and wonder if there are good ones around.

AndrewX,
Yes there are bad things with all makes and models of fourbies, and yes there are good things as
well. I wouldn't cross Nissan off my list, mainly because I have one and so far it's been good for me, I had a 92 GQ prior to my GU, my GQ was bomb proof, and in some ways I regret the sale. But I've moved on and I'm going to do my best to look after what I have, if the vehicle still lets me down then I'll deal with that when it happens. People warned me off buying a cheap Range Rover, I bought it and I've had some great fun, hasn't cost me anything apart from a truck load of fuel about 200 litres of oil and a starter motor, it's great fun and it will go anywhere, I look after it and don't abuse it, works for me. Please don't read into what I'm saying here as a reflection on the other people in this
forum as being wreckless people and vehicle abusers, that's not what i'm saying, but I do hear and read of govenment department drivers that do abuse these vehicles and these get recorded as failures and highlight weak areas, on the reverse you hear of GU's that have got to 400,000 more or less untouched and all they've done is shopping.
A Landcruiser was a bit out of my price range for what I wanted plus I'd heard about even more expensive problems with these. "Horses for courses" Andrew, it's up to you what you want to do with your fourbie and how much cash you've got lying around. Don't discount any brand until you've maybe had a test drive, unless it's an Exploder or a Musso, somethng a bit out of the box.
Over to you forumites.......... Keep the shiny side up

Andrew,
are you refering to new or second hand Vehilces?
Hope i didnt scare you off the patrol, cause its a great off road vehicle. You just have to know what to keep away from when shopping for one. I have 2 GQ's both 4.2 diesels. The one in the pic is a turbo. My old 1989 GQ has 600,00 kms on clock and has never missed a beat. Its still going strong but i retired it from long trips as she has done her job very
well. So now i will reward her with city driving. One of the most important things you need to understand about the diesels is that you have to service them every 5000kms, some would argue and say every 10,000 but if you plan on keeping it for a long time, its beneficial for you to service it every 5000.
Thats what i have done to
mine and the rewards are reliable travelling. Let me know what you think and please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
cokeaddict@optusnet.com.au Good luck.I love it when you talk DIRTY !

Thanks - I kniow about the 5000km bit - it's just an pil change as diesel accumulates sludge and soot. Black smoke = change the oil!

Coke has hit it on
the spot...
I've said it a billion times, but people still say "oils designed to last 30,000klms now".. Horsecrap.
Oil and filters are cheap, and
well worth it when you intend on keeping the car... Specially if you travel remote, its CHEAP insurance.
If you turn your car over every 2-3 years then Why bother, its not going to be your problem when it all goes pearshaped!

An interesting but somewhat broad statement. Would you expand upon it please as I'd be interested to know what to look out for.
Cheers
