Ok all the knockers will come jumping on this post but, can anyone tell me the different 3lt motor builds...example 2000 GU 3lt series 1 etc etc, and then tell me the problems associated with each build.

Mainly the upto 2000 models hole pistons, and have lots of problems... Gearbox's, Air cond pulleys that hate getting mud in them, $3000 repair no warranty.. Air flow sensors for the computer, $1200-1500 no warranty..
And they run 1 fan belt for the lot, alternator etc,so if you shag 1 in middle of nowhere, you walk...
I WANT ONE>..

Listen folks , I've seen all the doom and gloom stories on the
forum , if I wanted those all I have to do is look at the archives....had my wagon since new...it's 3lt 2001 build auto , dont know what series , the big old white bugger has got 87,000klm on it , no major problems , been up to the cape and several other trips down south and out west , dont tow anything and treat the car gently, dont try anything that is likely to bend or overtax it...so far has been a great wagon...

early models had small sump, crappy 5th gear, numerous other small 'improvements'...
Clutches are also another weak point.

RLNOMAD 87,000 of gentle treatment and no major problems. I'd also think you shouldn't have had any minor problems either at that low mileage.

What would
mine be , compliance plate says 7/01 build but tag on front strut before radiator says march 01 build...

RLNOMAD.
Lets keap this in perspective, there are lots of 3L out there and 99% are fine. but there is a big problem with failed pistons on a some early motors and a problem with a batch of gear boxes. plus the normal spread of faults that you get in any model. having said that the motor is a good unit but is let down by a poor instalation in the patrol. most other high performance diesel have a much better intercooler design, the air flow through the intercooler on the patrol seems to be its weakness. if you want to do a simple test you can see for yourself, if you place a ribbon on the air scoop and then drive the vehicle you will see the ribbon indicating the air flow is not always going the way you expect. When the main fan cuts in the intercooler is rs just when you need it most. THe other high performance diesels have high temp pistons, nissan has changed the piston suplier 3 times in the life of this motor, the other motors use ceramic piston tops nissan still use aluminium, the porsh? use forged steel pistons, when this 3L motor comes out of warranty I think there will be a market for forged steel pistons for the patrol- you could get some real power with them and a front mounted intercooler. Eric.

My 3lt has four radiators at the front already. don't want the intercooler there also. There is a guy called ROLY that has answered this question specifically in another question on this
forum so do a good search and you'll find - Maybe try "patol 3lt" or "GU 3lt" etc etc . I'm also interested in the
water spray add-on that you can get for those Jap four cylinder things (2wd). May be they are temp trigger- dunno. But it goes ok now. I think the series runs some thing like "I" 2.8lt,4.2lt petrol and diesel,;;; "II" 3lt diesel, 4.5 petrol, 4.2 diesel,;;; "III"(clear tail lights) 3lt diesel,4.8 petrol,4.2 diesel and 4.2 diesel I/C.. As far as the years of intro you'll have to find ROLY's answer.
