STRZLECKI TRACK CONDITIONS

We plan to travel on the Strzlecki from Adelaide in about three weeks time (mid May) and are keeping close tabs on the road conditions.

I have checked the road conditions sites and it seems that generally the Track is open, although with caution. From Innaminka we plan to head north east to Quilpie, and then meander up to Brisbane.

Has anyone been on the Track recently and able to comment on its condition? How much water is around?

We will be travelling with a Landcruiser and an offroad caravan (Kedron).
Chris

Hullo Chris
Which sites have you been monitoring? As at 1415 hrs today, the DPTI states Strez open to all vehicles. Then north with SA closed but I gather you are heading immediately NE in to Qld.
Suggest you contact the relevant Qld Shires directly
Cheers

Andrew, one of the main sites I use is the RACQ one: http://www.racq.com.au/travel/Maps_and_Directions/road_conditions

And yes we will not be needing to take the closed route, but rather going NE.

Chris, the DPTI is the road authoruty responsible for maintaining the track; they have gangs and supervisors out on the outback roads network.
If you go to their site, you get it from the horse's mouth re conditions, as they are the people who determine whether a track is open or has restrictions.

Wife and I traveled the Strezlecki Track from Innamincka to Leigh Creek 2 week ago, road was open all the way, rough/corrugated in places but should not be a problem, just take it slow as there is a 100 - 150klm section southern end of the track, north of the Flinders Ranges, that is nothing but loose rocks/stones,you will understand what I mean when you get there, make sure you have a good stone guard.

The road north to Cordilo Downs was closed at the river crossing in Innamincka due to the Cooper still flowing very high. The road to the Dig Tree was open.

Not much water around on the track, sawa lot on the sides of the track from Cameron Corner to the track but easy going and passable.

Have a great time

Stan, great information and very useful indeed. This is what we needed.

Where did you camp while travelling on the Track?

Chris,

We traveled from Tibooburra to Cameron Corner then onto Innamincka, camped on the Cooper, then traveled south on the track, even though it is only about 450klm long it took us 7 hours, not really anywhere along the track that appealed to us to stop and camp, mainly flat desert country.

Yes Justin, I do have that site, thanks. But for those who may not have seen it before, it is a useful resource.

We are still watching the weather for the trip (two weeks away now) but are thinking of taking a route onto the Track from the Highway at Parachilna through to Blinman, Wirrealpa and onto the Track at Balcanoona. In other words, taking a Westerly approach to the Track proper. On the maps it looks OK - but we all know that recent local knowledge is better than maps.

Anyone done that route before and able to comment? Recent information is good but even older info is good too.
