If the water tank is of the plastic type then it is very simple.
When you purchase the water guage they come with fitting instructions.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

I have a Jayco swan, The previous owner put on a clear plastic filler pipe, All i have to do is crouch down and have a look at high the water is up the pipe, not as convenient as a gauge but does the same job

Clear pipe is a bad idea, as it will grow algae on the inside which will make it's way into your tank!

Jayco has a good forum that covers most issues, you might want to try that.
