Mambray Creek is a good camp spot, not free but is nice and tidy with good camp spots.

Hancock lookout at the top of Horrocks Pass if you are coming in from that way.
Close to PA

I agree Alan. Can be very windy however and the trip through the pass can be interesting if you do not have a great deal of experience towing a van.

Try to get there before sunset as the sunsets can be fantastic.

Last time we went that way (2010), we found a nice flat area near the bottom of the pass (PA side, RHS of road) which will easily accommodate a van or 3

we were 2 vehicles w/- campertrailers..

on&off drizzling rain when we were there, wind was not an issue..

A few years ago we overnighted at North Tent Hill Rest Area about 34 km north of Port Augusta. Don't know if you can still camp there but we managed to get well back off the road and traffic did not worry us at all. In fact don't know if there was any traffic.

There is a camp area adjacent to the football club in Port Augusta. There is no booking system and is a matter of first in but is a decent size so you should be okay. If the actual parking area fills you can camp in the adjacent area. There are no facilities so you have to be self contained but fresh water and a dump spot is provided. During the hours the club is open campers can use the club toilets. The cost is $5 a night and you are limited to a seven night stay. We have stayed there on two occasions and have been very happy. It is in the Camps 6 book and although says it is for campervans caravans are also welcome if self contained. It is within a couple of kilometres of the main shopping area in Port Augusta.

Details of the Port Augusta Motorpark Home:

Number 750 in SA section of Camps 6 book
GPS S32 30 40. E137 47 09. (we found these details were not exact but could see the park from the position but had to change access road to enter park)

"Camp spot behind the Port Augusta Sports & Recreation facility. Power Station Road. 4 km east of Port Augusta. Self contained vehicles only. Maximum stay of 14 days (sorry I said earlier 7 days).

Can take big rigs.

Trust this helps.
