ExplorOz
I was updating our site stats page today and discovered that whilst 51% of our site visitation last month was from "repeat" site users, only 10% was direct traffic, with 86% coming as search traffic. When I analysed it further I see evidence that most people already know they want to visit our site - but instead of typing the web address into the address bar on their web-browser, they type it into Google. Here are our top 10 search engine referral keywords:
1. ExplorOz
2. exploroz
3. exploreoz
4. exploroz.com.au
5. explore oz
6. exploroz
forum
and then the specific terms start, but then we find...
12. exploroz.com
13. www.exploroz.com
15. exploreoz.com
19.
http://www.exploroz.com/forum/default.aspx
this is what people are putting into Goggle!
TIP: if you know the web address, or near enough, put it in the address bar !
Just saying!

Also, another thing you might find useful is the stats of what browser people are using. Not surprisingly, the majority of people seem to just use whatever their computer comes setup with so 45% of our site users are using IE, followed by 21% using Safari (that's due to all the iPhone users out there), followed by 16% using Firefox, 11% Google Chrome, down to 3% using Android Browser.
It's actually a shame that more people don't take the effort to change their browser and use Firefox. The reason is that for web developers, this browser is much more sophisticated. I know David always complains how he spends 75% of his development time trying to get something that works beautifully in the Firefox browser to work in IE. Anyway, its user choice, and developers (us included) have to make it work for all platforms so big drama but its all because we just accept Microsoft has taken over the world! LOL

Hi Michelle
After years of trouble with EO being to slow for me to use I changed from IE8 to Google Chrome, and it works much better. Some sites, such as RAC which i could not access at all works fine with Chrome. Another big advantage is that with IE, i would lose text in
forum replies if i accidentally opened a different website, or closed the tab. With Chrome, my part reply is still there :). I think Firefox has a similar feature.
From my own website statistics, a high percentage of users were accessing with IE, but this has been reducing monthly, and over the past month it is down to 47%.
Do you know how long since last access before someone is considered a 'new user'?

Repeat visitation is only known if a person's browser has accepted a cookie. Sometimes cookies get deleted, so periodically they get recounted as new, when in fact they'll be a repeat visitor. It's all a measurement tool.

Thanks Michelle for the stats.
I made a decision today to download Google Chrome and I again for the supplying the impetus for this change. I have gone from wanting to throw my laptop out the window to enjoying the reading online and the different directions it takes me.

You may find that a lot of members search ExplorOz through Google as it works better than the
forum search facility.

We find the present EO search facility excellent. It's predecessor wasn't, and Google certainly helped then.

Shakers that's an entirely different matter altogether. But yes, Google is very clever.

Actually I find it total rubbish & crud at the moment !!!!
Enter a text search with double quote delimeters for exact match and you get a whole heap of rubbish that doesn't even closely match the search criteria .... and I'm using Firefox.

Scott if you use inverted commas either side of the search parameter example it will find every thread with that parameter, IE the word 'search' within those commas somewhere within each of those threads.
It may not be the header but deep down within the thread.
Works very well but you need to better define what your search parameter is or you will receive a massive amount of found threads.
Google does the same but on a far bigger scale.

Hi Michelle. I have EO on my favourites and find that it downloads in about 3 seconds with IE 9. opening post is about the same. Very happy with that.

You can't beat Chrome for speed I reckon. I like it a lot and don't use the others at all....except I'm typing this on an ipad :-)

I have to vote for Chrome, too. I was an IE user for over 12 years, then the latest upgrade to IE left me disgusted, as well as confused, as the changes made were unnecessary and confusing. What galled me was the IE changes eliminated the Google toolbar, and you can't install it. Just more MS push.
So - I switched to Firefox. Tried it for a week or more and wasn't entirely happy with it - although it was better than IE.
I then downloaded Chrome and I've stayed with it, because it's fast, simple, and it works just fine. The best part is that it's tied into Google, so if someone mentions something, you just highlight it, right click and "search Google for xxxxxx (highlighted words or term)".
Cheers - Ron.

It's a download from google.com usually there is a link saying get chrome. Installs very easily and is an extra browser, no need to uninstall any others. Cheers
