I am trying to determine how tall a dune flag has to be. I have had a look at the posts here but no-one mentions how high they are. Is it OK to use the HF arial, (mine is a tap type mounted on the bull bar) that would put the flag approx 3m above the ground??
Any comments Ta

around about 1.8 to 2.5m higher than the highest point of the vehicle & does not matter what its made out of but something of a light wieght & flexable manner is recommended

Bruce,
I still want to do those ExplorOz dune flags!!

Cameron - I will add that the HF aerial would be too flexible as the flag is like a sail and will bend the aerial over. We sucessfully use our UHF antenna (but is very chunky and tall and has a massive spring base that keeps it pretty rigid). Another trick we use more often is to mount the flag to a tent pole by poking the pole through the bull bar and tapping it securely at both top and lower brackets of the bull bar for support (ie. don't try to mount the pole to the top of the bull bar but bring it right down to the base for support). You would generally be travelling slowly (ie. under 60km/hr) whilst flying a dune flag so it will hold together. The main thing is that the flag is best mounted to something at the front of your vehicle, rather than as some people do, on the roof. The reason is that when you crest a dune, the flag if on the roof will slant backwards and will loose height - if mounted to the bull bar then it will be the first thing an oncoming vehicle will see - the whole point of this safety device.Regards Michelle,

The ideal pole is the colapsable squid/fishing pole. They are like 12-15ft tall and colapse to about 40cm and cost approx$25-35

WE recommend the flag be attached at the front (when ascending a dune, it comes into view sooner than flags mounted elsewhere), that the flag be 3.0 - 3.6 metres above ground, that the flag be of a suitable size and be made of orange material so it stands out against a sky blue background. It should also be flexible so it swings around and doesn't get damaged by overhanging trees etc.

The blank fishing rod is common. Orange electrical conduit is also commonly used, but I find it needs about a metre of dowel at the bottom part to stiffen it there. The flange in the conduit can also be used to make the pole two piece. The conduit slips into 25mm RHS steel, so a bracket is easy to make. Duct tape is the quickest way to attach to a bullbar if you haven't time to make a mount.

Cameron, I purchased my dune flag from Opposite Lock accesories shop [Adelaide], about $85.00, can mount it thru aerial hole on bullbar, is bright orange, flexible, 3.6m in length and does the job very well. Just come back from 4 days at Robe area and the flag on the aerial trick is as good as not having a flag at all. It is not high enough to be of any use.

Cameron,

I used a telescopis fishing pole (used for float fishing)...

it is about 6 meters long (yes... i did say 6 METERS!!!)

all i did was superglue a piece of flouro orange fabric to the end of the pole and extended it all the way up... this brings the flag to approximately 7 meters above the ground... i mounted this to the bullbar with cable ties.....

This seems like overkill, but let me assure you that the higher the flag, the further away you can be seen...

I saw heaps of people in the robe - beachport area with similar setups....

This setup cost me about $30 for the pole, and a little time to make the flag and mount it...

Good luck!!!
