Hi everyone,
We are planning a trip to
Lawn Hill at the start of June and are planning a stop for a few nights on the Gilbert River between
Georgetown and
Croydon on the way. I've heard that the Gilbert River is seasonal so am wondering if there will be water in it this time of year. Any information on this, if the river is good for camping or on other good
bush camping sites along the way between
Georgetown and
Lawn Hill would be really appreciated. We are looking for
places with not too many other campers as we will have 2 dogs with us and we will be traveling in a Patrol so 4WD only access is no problem.. Cheers

HI Patrol11, go into
places and or click on this link to
Gilbert River Bridge. It was just a trickle last Sept. The
Einasleigh bridge had a good flow and was much more pleasant.....W

Thanks for this info, thinking
Einasleigh will be a better option.

Sorry forgot to ask, are there
places you can
camp along the river with not too many other people around?

Hi Patrol11, We stayed there 2 years ago and is not one I would recommend as it is rather dirty underfoot. About 20klms west of
Georgetown there is the
Cumberland Chimney (249 camps 6). We stayed there last year and found it a nice place just to chill out. There are some spots in a shaded area. I suggest you spend at least 1 night in
Georgetown, or unhook in the street and lockup, then travel out to Cobold
Gorge which is ~ 80 K's south of
Georgetown.
The gorge tour is
well worth the trip. You must stay at
Gregory Downs down in the river bed there are some of the best off road sites we have experienced. We stayed there for 4 night and took a day trip out to
Lawn Hill.
Enjoy your trip.
Cheers

Hi, thanks for your
feedback on the Gilbert River. Have decided it's probably not our best option. Cobbald
Gorge sounds good, we might head down there. We don't have a van, just the 4WD so no need to unhook =)
Do you know if there's any
bush camping spots near Cobbald? Thanks

Lawn Hill itself is a National Park, so no dogs, but you can
camp at Adels Grove with dogs.

Yes we are aware of that, but thanks. Good to know Adels Grove allows dogs though. Not sure if we will go into
Lawn Hill itself, just heading towards the
Gregory Downs area..
