Hi all,

I'm in the early stages of planning a trip for September this year. After the Birdsville races we are planning a Cape York Trip.

From Mt Isa is it more scenic to travel across the Flinders Highway to Townsville & then on to Cairns & Cape York or travel from Mt Isa up to Burketown & across Wills Dev. Road, Gulf Dev. Road & through to Cairns & then Cape York ?

Thanks
Phil P

Phil,

Was on part of the Flinders H'way, between Praire and Richmond, few years back, and it was rough enough to rival the Barkly H'way between Isa and 'Weal. Pretty boring open downs along that way too.

Up through Burketown would be good, though warming up that time of year. Another way would be to Hughenden, and up through the Lynd, Almaden(?) and onto the Atherton Tableland. You could coast down to Cairns from there-save some fuel that way!!!:-)

Don't forget a look at the Min Min centre in Boulia, and don't put the pedal to the metal too much on way to the Isa, "they" have been running a mobile service on that road for a while.

49 degrees in Birdsville yesterday, at least it's always cool in the Pub.
Hooroo...

Hi Phil

Consider launching to the Cape from Normanton then Kowanyama, Pompurraw (spell it something like that) then on to Musgrave and so on. It is the road less travelled and has some interesting sections particularly between Kowanyama and Pompurraw. Just an alternative to think about!

Cheers
