If i turn on the headlights the left indicators switch on (constantly on not blinking) without me useing the indicator switch,RHS operates normally. With headlights switched off all works normally. This has only recently occurred.

Derek is probably right, but a couple of questions to confirm.
1. Do both front & back turn indicators come on with the headlight?
2. Is the left headlight coming on at reduced power?
If yes to both then it certainly is an earth return connection fault. The left headlight and left front indicator must be sharing the same connection to chassis and this connection is poor. Trace the earth return wire from your left headlight to the point where it connects to the chassis. Remove the connection and clean it then remake the connection firmly. The earth return wire from the headlight may be enclosed within a loom but if you follow the loom a little you may find a wire leaving the loom to connect to chassis.
If all else fails, identify the earth return wire at the headlamp and connect a wire to it, then connect this new wire to a good earth point on the body/chassis.

Then it doesn't sound like a common earth fault problem. It is more likely an unwanted connection between your headlight circuit and the left indicator circuit.
As others have said look to your combo switch.
If it were a crossover short in the trailer plug as Shaker suggests then the indicators would come on with just the
parking lights as
well as the headlights as there is no headlight wire in the trailer plug, only parkers.

That could
well be an earthing problem !
Try and locate the main earth, from the battery, remove it and scratch up the metal alll around the bolt and
the nut it attatches.
OR
Get another earth strap, that can bolt to the motor, with enough length to allow for flex when the motor torques up, and go directly from the battery's earth, (so you have 2 earths).
OR
Do both
Cheers
