gear box is a bit noisey bit hard to change down from 2nd to 1st
noise in all gears doesnt jump out of gear ( not a whine just a bit of a slight rattle )
bit of back lash in drive chain
local 4wd mech recons not too much to worry about ,however dont want to get stuck

engine runs fine bit of black smoke ,doesnt burn or leak oil
any thoughts or experince cant find much in archives and some links not working

Nothing to worry about - those old cruiser boxes get pretty tired, cant change without double clutching jump out of gear etc etc but they just keep going

Rob,

Disconnect speedo cable and go for a drive. You would be surprised at the noise they can produce. I have known of people that have rebuild the gearbox and replaced wheel bearings only to find out its the cable, so its worth a first look.

Cheers tony.

Miy 97 model with a 4.5 petrol has done 237000 and has the same problem , a bit whiney in second and a fair bit of backlash, (mind you it has had the backlash since I bought it at 118000) hard to get from 2nd to third but you get used to it.
I wouldn't worry about it too much as these boxes are reliable and take a lot of punishment. All the diesels seem to have that rattle on idle.
I think your mechanic is correct.

Cheers Rod

Sounds like its dying a little bit everywhere. The synchroes generally go in these(I think its the H150 gearbox)
I would start getting prices on a rebuild.Get yours rebuilt rather that accept a changeover.
