Is there anyone with figures on fuel economy from GU 4.2 turbo diesels over a range of conditions.

I have a new GU 4.2 Turbo Diesel (1 month old) and can offer the following: Freeway running 12 litres/100, commuting in Canberra 12.8 litres/100, towing off road camper trailer on well formed dirt road 13 litres/100. The vehicle has only done 2500 KM to date.

Mine's a 1999 GU ST 4.2 turbo. Has now done 43,000kms.
Highway (cruising at about 115-120) without the roofrack is about 14L/100kms. Around town is about 12L/100kms. Add 2L/100 to the highway with a roofrack on.

Sean,
Mine is a 99 model with 100,000kms on the clock.
I am getting an average 12L/100kms on the highway it increases if I go past the 100km/h limit otherwise it is about 12L/100km, in the bush it can be as low as 11L/100Kms if the drive is gentle (ie the Cape York trip), however fully loaded on a Vic high country trip it used as much as 17L/100kms.
Best so far has been 10L/100kms (1200kms on the tanks).
My last fillup commuting in Canberra was 11.6L in 100kms.
I hope it helps.

Thanks fellas for the reply.
I have a 3l GU and the figures you are quoting are significantly better than what I am getting plus servicing is not proving cheap (not as cheap as I was told at purchase) and I am having my share of minor problems (manly due to poor servicing by the dealer).

At next trade in, I will definately pay the extra for the 4.2.

Sean, we've just returned from a trip around Tassie (read: no flat or straight roads) in our GU 4.2TD - very late series 1 - 40,000km. The 2000km we covered was made up of bitumen, some off-road, some dirt roads, a bit of beach driving and a lot of hills. We had 2 adults, 2 teenagers, all our gear, but no roofrack or trailer.
We averaged 11.5l/100km for the trip. We normally get around 11.0l/100km on the highway at 100-110km/h, and around 10.0l/100km at 85-90km/h. Around town commuting (Melb) returns about 12.5l/100km. Our camper trailer (1000kg) adds about 2-3l/100km at 100kph, but it really depends on the terrain. We've had absolutely NO problems with it (I hope I don't regret saying that!!) and are very happy. It's no rocketship, but it does it's intended job very well. Don't forget, the 4.2TD service interval is every 5,000km - oil change (10 litres), every 10,000km oil change and the 2 oil filters, plus any other scheduled items. I'm not sure how that stacks up against the 3.0l DI model. Hope this helps. Geoff
