My Place Rating: My Rating 3/5

Cobra was recommended as a stop for touring at Mount Augustus. Situated approximately 37kms from Mount Augustus, it is not the closet camp to the Mount. It is still easy travel though and short drive. Between Cobra and the rock there are a couple of interesting points of interest to view that maybe missed if staying at the local park.
If you are travelling and enjoy the basic essence of camping/caravanning, this could be the place for you. Cosmetically its not an overly attractive place. It fits in perfectly with the landscape. The local enviroment maybe harsh at different times of the year, but we found the welcome and ambiance of the place very alluring. Our hosts, Jim & Coleen, were perfect hosts and made us feel exttremely welcome.
We arrived after dark and it was pitch black. With Jim's help we were easily able to find our bay and park up for the night. Once we were settled, Jim invited us to join him up at the Inn. We accepted his gracious invitation and sauntered up to the large outside fire they had roaring away. A welcome source of heat on a chilly night. The evening, and the next, was spent around said fire, enjoying drinks, conversation, jokes, and even some campfire songs!!!
The site had water available, although no power. We didn't ask about the use of a gennie, as we were solar powered. Also can't review the toilets or showers unfortunately, as we used our van. Meals are available at the Inn, although as we were self-sufficient, didn't eat there.
I think an extremely important thing to note is the following. On the maps and local information boards set up by DEC, it says that fuel is available at Cobra. THIS ISN'T QUITE CORRECT. Please note that fuel can only be obtained if pre-ordered over the phone. Pull up and fill up, is not available. We were ok for fuel but think it is important to know, as one could get caught short if expecting to fuel up here.
So to summarize. If you are fairly self-sufficent and want something hovering on bush camping and park camping, then Cobra will tick the boxes. It has a bit of something for most. If you like your own company and want to explore then it is ideal. If you want to explore yet also interact and socialize, then it is for you to. One final recommendation...... Jim took us out in his 4WD to show us some spots only to been seen through local knowledge. We highly recommend this as we saw some lovely places that we otherwise may have missed. Cobra may not be overloaded with facilities and attractions, but we enjoyed the basics..............good food, good drinking and great company.
This is a very difficult place to rate. For facilities etc. you could only give it a two star. However we are going to base our rating purely upon our own, personal, feel good factor upon leaving. We therefore give it a 3........
