Hi to everyone, Today I looked at an Ford F series 4x4 ex ambulance early 1990s model, Given the age of these vehicles I was wandering if anyone has seen or knows of a poptop conversion to these ? Or is it not possible due to the design of the Jakar cabin ? Any information would be great. Thanks Bob.

I have seen a caravan accessories site where you can buy all the bits and pieces for a pop top roof and DIY but I forget where.

Anything is possible, just depends on either your personal skills (DIY), dollars to spend or a combination of both.
I'd be surprised if JAKAB would be interested in modifying the body as they would have type approval/compliance for the way it is and doing a one of mod would be very expensive.
Not knowing how much of a frame is inside the fibreglass shell and whether or not it lends itself to having a poptop fitted it is a bit hard to say whether it is feasible.
First port of call would be JAKAB, can only ask as you probably aren't the first.
Next would be a certifying engineer to see what you can and can't do to the body. JAKAB may well refer you to the engineer involved in original certification.
As long as you don't cut any ROPS frame in the shell then it should be possible.

Thanks for your input, I thought it was a long shot as there are a few old effies out there, and in my time travelling I've never seen a potop exambulance. but it;s always good to ask. Thanks Bob.

Yep, I have one. I understand it started life as an outside broadcast van for channel 10 and the pop top was added later.Mine has a double bed that folds down from the back. Very comfortable.

Unfortunately it doesn't have the towing capacity to tow our 21' van so it's for sale.

Cheers,
Neil

Lots of people will be surprised how poor the towing capacity and the load carrying capacity is of the F trucks for the aparant size.
