Yes, I know it has been flogged mercilessly for about a decade on here , but I have googled and used the search function for about 4 weeks and am still no clearer.

As we have been deciding whether or not to sell the ol' girl , I have been pricing up what needs to be done to make her drivable vs purchasing a new vehicle.

The Troopy we have was manufactured on the 2 Mar , 1999. It was ex QLD police , and much of the car is different from the standard 75 series. [so I am told].
It has the N/A 1HZ beast of an engine! [cough]

I am unable to id the gearbox/ tranny combination , so the best I am able to do is describe the shift pattern and placement of the 'box from the cab. The underside of the vehicle yields no info from what I can learn online.

The gear knob , and the transfer case knob are directly next to each other , not angled or top down.
The transfer shifter pattern is H2 then H4 directly below it. The neutral 'gear' is directly to the right of H4 , and the L2 is directly to the right of that. [make sense so far?].
L4 is the straight up from L2, up towards the dash.

If someone can confirm if it is the R151 , H55 or H150 ect box , I would be ecstatic.
Either that , or post some links re ways of identifying which box the ol girl has please?

Am pricing a rebuild/strengthen of the box so as to avoid issues on the road , but as I am remote , most trans guys always ask what box is in it when I email for quotes and info.

Cheers for any useful info.

I think it was in 1998 they changed the front diff and box.

Pre 1998 had H55F box
post 1998 NON factory turbo had R151F fine spline box
post 1998 factory turbo had H151 box

it may also state on the Toyota build plate under the bonnet what gearbox it is.

Join LCOOL lots of info there.

You have the H55F gearbox. Just look at the compliance plate on the firewall, you should see it listed there. You should have the leaf spring front end (i.e. HZJ75 and not HZJ78).

The relatively weak R151F gearbox was put behind the 1Hz from August 1999 when the coil sprung front end was introduced with the 78 series.
The strong H150 gearbox went behind the petrol and factory TD models.

Yes, that's a definite! H55F is in my 97'HZJ75 Troopie.

A possible contact for all things TOYOTA transmissions is Norm @ Trenfield Motors - Meekatharra. He put a recond gearbox/transfer case in mine last July and its been going like a train ever since. They look after station owners and everyone around the mining industry and his knowledge was second to none.

If you have coil springs up front, it is a hzj78 or 79, cant remember which is ute and troupy. They have r151. If it is leaf front end, it should be h55.
The best way to find out is to open the bonnet, and look at the compliance plate, which lists transaxle as h55 k295 or r151 k295, being the gearbox then the diff...if you have lockers, the diff will have another code, 295 is an lsd diff.

Thanks all very much for the info!

Seems I was not too bright when using the Google function last night as I was under the influence of the most dangerous illness on earth , the Man Flu!

Appreciate the clarification ,and will confirm via the compliance tomorrow morning , just as soon as I can get the wife to find where I hid my glasses!

Cheers again for sharing the knowledge.
