Test drove an auto for around an hour on and off road. It has a very good 5 speed auto, as good as all the 6 speeds I have driven.
Whilst driving at 100 kph on the highway the fuel economy was shown 7.1 L/100 pretty good for a brand new vehicle. There was very little turbo lag un like the BT 50 and new 2.8 TD Colorado.
Will I be buying one, you bet soon as I can find enough money, no hope to have one before Xmas lol. And yes I am biased, after owning 2 Isuzu's for around 12 years, there reliability has been brilliant.

Are they the same as the Colorado ?? I was reading up on them (Colorado) and they have changed engine supplier to Duramax ?? Never head of them before and I wonder about their reliability compared to the Isuzu engine which as we all know are extremely reliable and very fuel efficient................

Kimba10 hi, the motor in the Colorado is made by VM Motori (Fiat) this motor is the same used in the current Jeep Wrangler.

Hello Kimba10.

This is one of the reasons I was considering the Dmax over the Colorado. I'm sure the Colorado will be fine, but at the end of the day all previous Colorado's and Dmax's have been using the Isuzu motor. Thats good enough for me.

Thankyou for your reply Isuzumu. I haven't had a chance to drive the BT 50 or new Colorado.
To me Isuzu are the worlds largest truck engine maker. It stands to make sense that they can build a tough reliable motor and vehicle. I'm not sure if the magazines and reviews will rate it. It seems the more gears the better. I test dive an auto Hilux. I must say that the engine was quite sluggish and not all that responsive.

To give you and idea how tough their motors are I had a mate who clocked up 700000ks on a 2.8 td Rodeo, and another mate has a 93 v6 petrol Jack with 488000ks. The Jack is still going fine and only burns a L of oil between changes.
Cheers Pete

Ok. Thanks for the information. The initial reviews seem good. I guess time will tell as more of them come onto the road. I'm waiting for one to turn up at the dealer in Darwin to give it test myself. I'll let the forum know of the outcome. Never been a better time to buy a new 4WD ute with so much choice.

Hi Az
Took the D Max for a spin today for around half an hour and it came up trumps compared to the Colorado we test drove on Monday.
As Bruce said above fuel use was around mid 7's
The D Max gave a better ride (in my opinion and that of my wife) although it still rides little stiff, but I guess in time and with some weight in the back, that would improve.
We took the auto and found as bruce said there was no turbo lag
At $47500 drive away for the LSU model it looks like a great deal.
Comes with side steps and rear step which you don't get with the similar model Colorado and also cheaper.
Just waiting for sales rep to get back to me with tradein price for our Grand Cherokee before we decide
Was also great they let us take it for test on our own for as long as we wanted, however we were pushed for time today hence the half hour test.

The 2012 Dmax has the same old indestructable motor, albeit slight twigged for a smiggen more power and torque.
However it is now well behind just about all the new relaease Utes on the road for power and torque. Same can be said for the Hilux.
The ealier and current model can't even match a Falcon/Territory for torque.
I'd be more intersted in purchasing a run out model for the big cash savings and if I could afford a new model I'd be looking at the Colorado or BT50 for 5 star ANCAP rating and much greater power and torque figures.
Cheers, Ozjohn.
