Hi, today our 1982 Coaster (BB20 body/3B engine) reached the 299,999.9 mark. Worth a celebration. It seems to like it though as it doesn't want to click further and is stuck. It already struggled at every change from 999 to 000 make a click noise and let the speedo drop a little but now it has been stuck for at least 20k's at the 299,999.9 reading. Although that keeps the mileage "young", I would like to fix it. Before I dismantle the dash it would be good to know if it can be fixed or if it's a sealed unit? Any ideas for how to do this?

almost all non digital odometers work on a geneva mechanism.

where the incomming drive drives the lowest significant digit usually the 1/10th or thw 1Km digit.
when that digit rolls over from 9 to 1 it drives the next digit,

when the second digit rolls over from 9 to 0 the mechanism must drive two geneva wheels ( two digits).

and so on .....the more digits rolling over from 9 to 0 the more stress on the mechanism

sounds like you have a problem between the forth and fifth digit.

Can this be fixed.....speak to a auto instrument dude......I've had geneva mec's appart but never speedo's.

It may be as simple as a bur on a cog or a lump of grit or simply the whole mec is dry or full of dust.

Some of the toyotas also have a timing belt change mec that flicks over at 300 000.....that might be a little sticky.

It depends on how game you are.....these things all come appart, some are easier than others.

cheers

Thanks, I suspected as much. I'm not that concerned about taking them apart but the putting together back again will perhaps be the challenge. Your reply gives me the confidence to try and fix it.

Cheers, Axel
