It seems 25000 Chinese cars sold in Oz are to be recalled for using asbestos in exhaust gaskets. That would seem to be a clear indication that inspections of Aust.
standards are fairly casual, but I suppose non asbestos gaskets "look" the same.
Apparently asbestos has been a no no since 04 ,but was widely used prior to that &
auto tecnicians were supposedly taught the correct way to handle them. I doubt
the current gaskets will cause any undue health issues, as exhausts dont seem to be
the hopeless articles of past times, due to decent steel & better construction methods.
Strangley enough, even the doomdsayers of Chinese auto quality have gone quiet of
late....sales targets have been exceeded & the roads dont appear to be littered with
dead Great Walls etc...but I can still hear the laughter when Honda first had cars in
Oz too..:))))). I'm not about to buy one, but it"s all interesting..isnt it?
cheers....oldbaz.

Apparently the Chery is also affected.
I called into the local dealer to enquire to inquire about my parents one which they tow behind the campervan. He said that any vehicle parts made after 2002/3 is not allowed any asbestos. This manifold gasket has about 0.1% in it. My vehicle which is a 96 Patrol has asbestos in the gasket.
Apparently Australia is the only country that has this ruling.
It is also a voluntery recall.
On another note, Dad was telling me after having the car bouncing around on the trailer, he needs to bleed the brakes. He will be getting this looked at when they get
home.
