I have been following this site for a number of years reading about all you explorers going around the block . Now its my turn after 32 years in the 1 job I finished yesterday . My d40 narvar is all but ready I pick up new caravan on Thursday. House is almost packed into shed . The biggest problem I have is do I turn left or right at the pacific highway . We should be away for 5 to 10 years is this enough time .
Look forward to meeting all of you out there somewhere.

Feathery ( Greg )

Hi Greg,

Haha...don't know whether you have given yourself enough time! lol.
Wish I could talk my husband into travelling more often and for longer than we do...he is always the one who gets restless for home!

Best wishes and see you on the road somewhere maybe.

regards,

Heather

Greg, congratulations! It sounds like the next stage in your life is going to be a fantastic one. It is amazing how many long term travellers are out there. But be warned. They all end up with that dam smile!
We hope to do the same thing in a few years time. I have finished work, but alas my poor wife still have 4 ½ years to go. That is if she makes it. She is an emergency nurse and boy, has she had some bad shifts lately.
Hope to see you out there one day, all the best.
Kevin

About to join you.
15 years with a tent (like a Barnum & Bailey Circus tent - once slept 5 adults, 4 kids & 2 labrador dogs!).
15 years along the tracks with an off road camper trailer (turned over on Kalumburu road, back on wheels, bashed into shape & off for another 5,000 km before repairing).
Now the 17 ft caravan with everything including ensuite - hope we last til 85 so we get another 15 years!
Starting with 3 years, up & down our country, in South Oz in Oct.
Both Prado & Big Red have Exploroz stickers.

Good on you Greg - won't be long and you will feel like you've won a huge lottery when the need to be anywhere in particular at any set time just fades away..... that is the biggy in my view. Oh and the Pacific Highway - with your available time maybe you can take a safer, slower, better route ? If you do, that will be Module 1A completed in your traineeship :-o).

When you get to the highway just flip a coin. Heads is left, tails is right.

Hi Greg,

Been retired ourselves for just on 12 months and have done a couple of trips with our van, the longest so far 3 1/2 months. Only came back because one of our daughters is about to add grandchild number 6 to our flock. Mate I am just getting used to the idea that this is for the rest of our lives and not just an extended holiday. 5 to 10 years should be enough to get used to the idea, after that take a bit more time in each spot.
Best of luck and safe travels.

Cheers

Greg,
We have been on and off the road for ten years. The simple answers to your questions is....
No..5 to 10 years is not enough. Family mainly gets in the way, we are currently "off' for a few months (family).

And....dont make plans. That left versus turning right corner on the highway will be just one of the first of many complex problems you will encounter.

And trust me these problems just wear you down over the years. Like...you know...what time does one pull over to camp for the night..what time to have the first drink...who to drink with? Should you have more than one??
And then there's the...What time are we leaving tomorrow problem...and where are we going. The list just goes on. But dont worry too much the sun comes up again tomorrow.

So try not to let the stress get to you too much ,hope to see you out there.
