Hey guys, Just wondering who's been to Mackay and where did you
camp? I'm checking out a few of the National Park campsites that sound ok, but just wondering if Midgies (spelling) are a problem with the campsites that are close to the beach and crabs/toads at night. Sound like a bit of a tourist don't I!! We're taking the tent and the kids (6 & 4) so would love to hear where others have stayed and what it was like.
Thank you :)
Gezza :)

What's the story with swimming in the ocean up there? Can you do it or is there too many stingers? Any Crocs around there?

Yes - Not A BIG park, has had a couple of ordinary reviews. I think management changes & reviews got better. It is an older park & they were having issues with expanding.
But it is right at the beach with good fishing & lots of sand for the kids

We saw a lot of people swimming when we were there, at lower tide in the pools. The water really races as the tide goes in/out.
A lot of swimmers were at other beaches
Would be best to ask a local about the safety of that spot.
We did swim at the beaches near
Slade Point

We live in Proserpine and i can tell you there are crocs and there are marine stingers in mackay waters. "so you gotta ask yourself do you feel lucky ....?" we only swim in pools.

Gezza,
It is to early for stingers yet but just this afternoon a fog rolled into Mackay about 5pm. I think be the Grand Banks or Nova Scotia. I have never seen this before.
Yes there are crocs about but if you swim in the ocean chances are about a million to one a croc will happen along.
With kids
check out
Cape Hillsborough. Nice spot.
