Question: Workmans Beach Camping Area - QLD

Just wondering how busy this gets in school holidays (particularly September). Can you book to stay here or is it first in first served? Is the beach safe for swimming (stingers and/or crocs?) Do you see many kids there? Thanks :)

We checked this camping area out in early August. It was very crowded with winter travellers then. Vans and tents were jammed in all over the place. We decided it was unattractive and not worth $10 a night. It was probably not very suitable to kids then as traffic went every direction and sites had little space. It is quite a walk to a swimming beach. You can't book. The beach caravan parks in the area get very busy too and you would need to book ahead. We stayed at Discovery Coast CP about 6ks out on the road in to Agnes Waters. This was a comfortable, quiet, small park with plenty of trees and space and a more reasonable price for the area - $27 per night from memory. It has a pool but is a drive to the beach. We were recommended to try the campground at Baffle Creek but didn't get there in the end. School holidays are sure to be busy all up the coast. Have you thought about some of the lakes and dams a few ks inland from the coast in from the coast if you want a cheap or free bush camp by water with your kids? Some of those could work well for you. Lynne

Would have to agree with John and Lynne on all points. Not a very nice or friendly place. Last time I went there for a look there were a few families there but also a lot of (dare I say it) ....dregs.

Thanks for your advice guys. Lynne, we quite often go inland to lakes/rivers/creeks etc but this time wanted to be beachside. We have ended up booking at Captain Cook Holiday Village. We rarely stay in caravan parks - more often private campgrounds on people's property. Captain Cook looks fine, has a pool, playground and walk to the beach. How bad can it be??? Time will tell :)

Thanks for your advice.

Cheers,
Gezz :)
